Brandon Thomas-Asante’s exit: Did West Brom get it right?

Brandon Thomas-Asante is now the Championship’s top goalscorer after scoring against Watford last weekend.

Ryan Mason has struggled for goals in certain games already this season, as Thomas-Asante‘s sale has now been a hot topic among the West Brom fanbase.

Thomas-Asante left West Brom to join Coventry City in the 2024 summer transfer window, after two seasons at The Hawthorns.

Now, with Thomas-Asante firing on all cylinders for the Sky Blues, there is a strong conversation to be had over West Brom sanctioning the sale.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s West Brom exit will split opinion

Thomas-Asante was sold in July 2024, as West Brom then brought the likes of Torbjorn Heggem and Mikey Johnston to The Hawthorns on permanent deals.

Now, Thomas-Asante is seen as one of the best players in the Championship, which won’t help Albion’s frustrations, as West Brom fans are already unhappy with Coventry City over away ticket prices for the two sides’ game in November.

In 2022, West Brom signed Thomas-Asante from Salford City for a reported fee of around £300,000, and he was later sold to Coventry for £3m after add-on fees are included.

West Brom have been battling PSR issues, and there’s no doubt the profit made on Thomas-Asante’s sale would have helped balance the books.

However, West Brom’s current top goalscorer is a midfielder in Isaac Price, as striker Aune Heggebo has only managed to find the back of the net once in the Championship this season for the Black Country Club.

Now, with Heggebo’s struggles at West Brom, and Josh Maja still regaining fitness, Thomas-Asante could have been the difference between the Baggies being 11th and first right now.

What are West Brom fans saying on Thomas-Asante’s form?

There’s no doubt it’s easy to say that the Baggies miss Thomas-Asante now, while he’s doing well, but the striker only scored six times for the Sky Blues last season in all competitions.

His exit has been one of the main talking points after his recent form, as Albion fans have had plenty to say.

In short, West Brom did make a mistake in selling a player who is now showing he is prolific at this level.

But needs must, and the funds were much needed at the time.

West Brom fans will just be hoping that he can have a quiet day when the Baggies meet him again at the Coventry Building Society Arena on 22 November.
