Matheus Pereira could be set for return to English club five years after West Brom exit

Former West Brom favourite Matheus Pereira could be set for a return to English shores five years on from his Hawthorns exit.

Brazilian outlet Bola VIP reported on Thursday that Pereira is set for talks with Cruzeiro chiefs next month to discuss his contract situation.

The one-cap Brazil international is coming to the end of his existing deal and, while he favours staying at his current club, a return to England has been mooted.

Pereira remains a popular figure among the West Brom fanbase after spending two campaigns in the Black Country.

West Brom fans would love Pereira to return, and it may well be that his time with Brazilian side Cruzeiro is soon coming to an end.

Matheus Pereira stance shared amid approach from English club

Pereira still keeps up to date with West Brom affairs from afar, even if he departed The Hawthorns in 2021.

The year of 2026 could be a big one for the 29-year-old as he decides on his future with Cruzeiro, where he has been since 2023.

Pereira’s stance is that he would like to agree fresh terms, with the midfielder requesting an extension of two years.

However, if that is not granted then it may well be that he looks elsewhere. While no specific English club is mentioned, the report from Bola specifically mentions a return to England could be possible.

An unnamed team from these shores have already tabled an offer, it is claimed, but the ball is very much in Pereira’s court right now.

Cruzeiro are eager to sort out the situations of those soon to be out of contract, making Pereira’s case one of their priorities in December.

How has Pereira performed back in Brazil?

Pereira was caught up in transfer drama earlier this year when reportedly offered to Flamengo, but he ultimately stayed with Cruzeiro.

He leads the way in the Brazilian top flight for chances created from open play (51) and has six goals to his name.

Pereira’s 67 progressive carries places him among the top seven in the league, meanwhile, and he also has seven assists to his name.

Indeed, only seven others have more combined goals and assists in the division this season, showing that he still has the ability to change matches.

Even if it’s not at The Hawthorns, West Brom fans will be watching closely to see where Pereira ends up next if he does indeed depart his homeland next year.
