Alfie Gilchrist shines as 3/10 woeful – West Brom player ratings vs Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom could only settle for a goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Off the back of West Brom’s 1-0 defeat to Ipswich, the pressure was on Ryan Mason to get his side back to winning ways, having only picked up three points from the previous 12 available.

Aside from West Brom and Sheffield Wednesday’s kit clash, the first half at The Hawthorns lacked any talking points, with Albion failing to pose any credible threat.

Unfortunately for Mason, that didn’t really improve in the second half, with his Albion side forced to settle for a point in a 0-0 draw.

Alfie Gilchrist shows promise for Albion

Alfie Gilchrist joined West Brom on a permanent deal from Chelsea in the summer, but had to wait until matchweek 12 to make his full debut and he kept his place in the side against the Owls.

In general, he looked solid, with some neat passages of play on the ball, while also being resolute defensively when called upon.

In a first half that was devoid of quality, Gilchrist created two chances for his side, which was the most of anyone on the pitch by the break.

His display carried into the second half, and Mason will take some heart from his performance in the absence of George Campbell, even if the team’s performance was far from good enough.

Ryan Mason needs to drop Samuel Iling-Junior

Not for the first time this season, Samuel Iling-Junior was largely anonymous for West Brom, and on the occasions he was involved, he was very poor with the ball.

The 22-year-old lost possession of the ball far too easily, and on way too many occasions, while failing to pose any real attacking threat.

Aside from Iling-Junior’s wondergoal against Leicester, his impact for Albion has been minimal since his summer arrival, and it was no different against the Owls.

Mason has to take him out of the team while his performances are far below par, with Karlan Grant his most likely replacement.
