Aune Heggebo terrible again as damning stats emerge in West Brom defeat vs Charlton

West Brom’s season keeps going from bad to worse under Ryan Mason.

Sonny Carey’s last-minute goal in Charton’s 1-0 win over West Brom compounded even more misery on 4 November, with fans starting to turn on the 34-year-old.

Mason is under heavy pressure to get West Brom back into the Premier League for the first time since 2020-21, and based on current evidence, this seems incredibly unlikely.

Aune Heggebo was particularly poor in the loss to Charlton, and it highlighted how out of depth he is in B71 after signing from Norway in the summer.

Aune Heggebo’s West Brom career has started terribly

The result leaves West Brom in 14th place in the Championship, and their hopes of reaching the play-offs have once again been diminished.

Against Charlton, the Norwegian forward struggled to cope with their physicality, and he was eventually subbed off for Josh Maja.

According to FotMob, Heggebo won only 29 per cent of his ground duels and nine per cent of his aerial duels against the Addicks.

Heggebo joined West Brom for £4.75million from Norwegian side Brann, and it’s safe to say that he has adapted incredibly poorly to the Championship.

The 24-year-old has registered an expected goals (xG) of 2.31 in 14 league appearances, yet he has only scored once for his new club.

Not only is that total nowhere near good enough, but the fee paid for him is a damning indictment that West Brom’s transfer window has been more than underwhelming.

West Brom were among the favourites for a play-off place at the start of the season, yet that has never looked further from happening at this moment in time.

Goalscoring woes are at the heart of West Brom’s problems

The Baggies have scored three goals in their last six matches, and they’ve only scored three goals in a match on one occasion this season.

After a brilliant start to the season, West Brom’s winless run away from home dates back to 31 August.

Maja has been underused by Mason, whilst Daryl Dike’s fitness record means he’ll rarely be available to score the goals that West Brom need.

Mason has to do better in multiple departments, but if he doesn’t fix Heggebo’s form in front of goal, then Shilen Patel will be forced to make a tough decision.
