Julian Warren feels sorry for West Brom fans as announcement at The Valley adds to woes – ‘Nightmare’

Sky Sports presenter Julian Warren could not help but feel sorry for the travelling West Brom fans after an announcement that was made at The Valley prior to full-time.

Those who made the trip to South London saw West Brom lose 1-0 to Charlton through a 95th minute goal from Sonny Carey.

West Brom were made the underdogs against Charlton, but that will not lessen the fury of supporters towards under-fire boss Ryan Mason.

Mason is a man under pressure at The Hawthorns after a poor run of form, with the defeat to Charlton making it one point from the past 12 on offer.

And the journey home for many of those who made the 150-mile journey south was made even worse by an announcement relayed before that late sucker-punch.

A2 and A102 northbound closed due to fire

West Brom were beaten 1-0 by Ipswich Town in their most recent away match prior to Tuesday, and that was the same scoreline in this latest woeful display.

Albion fans travelled in their numbers through a mixture of public transport and personal travel.

However, those making their way back to the Midlands and surrounding areas were informed of some travel chaos around 20 minutes from full-time.

Charlton announced that a major fire incident had forced the A2 and A102 northbound to close, meaning supporters travelling northbound would have to seek alternative routes.

This announcement was relayed by Aaron Paul on Sky Sports Soccer Special, to which presenter Warren replied: “Oh, nightmare. And for those Baggies fans wanting to get home as well.”

As a reminder, this announcement arrived before that sickening late Charlton winner that left Josh Griffiths – who had earlier saved a penalty – red faced.

Charlton 1-0 West Brom match stats in full

Charlton’s win moved them up to fifth in the Championship, while Albion are now down in 14th and are continuing to fall.

This marks the first time since March 2023 that West Brom have lost four away league games in a row, doing so under Carlos Corberan.

West Brom edged the possession at The Valley, but that provides absolutely no solace for this latest defeat.

The Baggies generated an expected goals (xG) return of 0.81 to Charlton’s 1.06, which suggests the Addicks did enough to earn the three points.

And while Albion outshot their opponents 13 to 11, they ultimately found the target from just one of those to Charlton’s three, one of which proved the difference between the sides.
