Ryan Mason may be a step closer to the sack at West Brom after the 1-0 loss to Charlton on Tuesday.

Mason's progress has stalled at West Brom after a positive start, with just one win in their last six Championship matches.

Some West Brom fans want Mason to be sacked, and they may have a case with the way that recent results have gone.

The former Tottenham coach made an utterly baffling decision on Mikey Johnston, which did not pay off at the Valley on 4 November.

Ryan Mason dropped Mikey Johnston for Charlton loss

West Brom boss Mason went with a different system for the clash in London, with Karlan Grant and Isaac Price operating behind Aune Heggebo.

That left no room for Johnston in the starting line-up, despite the fact that he has been one of the Baggies' most dangerous players this season.

The switch did not result in the victory that he wanted, as his side were still as toothless in front of goal as before, despite creating lots of chances.

Why Johnston should not have been dropped for Charlton calamity

Johnston's axing caused surprise before kick-off as he was one of the bright sparks for The Hawthorns outfit against Sheffield Wednesday last time out.

The Ireland international created the most chances against the Owls, had three touches in the opposition box and took three of Albion's 11 shots in the 1 November clash, per Sofascore.

  • Johnston has two goals and four assists in 13 Championship matches this season
  • In 17 minutes against Charlton, he created one chance and had one shot
  • Mason's decision to drop him proved to be a mistake

The 26-year-old was brilliant against the Hillsborough side, and the fact that Mason decided to drop him, when his side are struggling to score was bizarre.

He may well have just signed off on his own sack, as his side failed to produce without Johnston in the team, making his decision look foolish.

If he is dismissed from his post, then he will only have himself to blame, after the poor tactical decisions that he has regularly made.
