Tony Mowbray favourite for Championship job just months after West Brom sacking
Tony Mowbray is currently the favourite to take the Middlesbrough job amid the impending departure of Rob Edwards.
It would be a quick return to management for the 61-year-old, who departed the Baggies in April.
Taking over from Carlos Corberan, Mowbray’s West Brom fell out of the playoffs at the end of the campaign, which resulted in his eventual sacking with weeks left of the season.
However, it now appears that he could make his return to Middlesbrough as they prepare to search for a new manager.

Tony Mowbray favourite to replace Rob Edwards at Middlesbrough
Despite Boro sitting third going into game week 15, Edwards looks set to jump ship and move to Premier League’s bottom side Wolves.
On 8 November, Middlesbrough agreed terms with the Old Gold club ahead of the move, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.
- Mowbray returned to West Brom for his second spell as manager in January 2025
- However, he was quickly sacked in April 2025 as he struggled at The Hawthorns
- Mowbray only won five of his 17 matches at the Baggies upon his return
This brings an end to the Black Country club’s hunt for a new manager, with former West Brom star Derek McInnes being linked to the Wolves job during their search.
Now, the task for Middlesbrough will be to find a replacement, with the bookies making Mowbray the early favourite, months after his West Brom sacking.
According to BetVictor on 8 November, the former Baggies boss is 5/4 to get the job.
Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves.

Following this, former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil is second alongside Steven Gerrard at 5/1.
Mowbray is a Middlesbrough hero
While Mowbray may have overseen many memorable moments at West Brom, he is best known for his time at Boro.
The 61-year-old has both played and managed in Teeside, making over 400 appearances as a player back in the 1980s and early 1990s.
In this time period, he led Middlesbrough from the brink of liquidation back into the top-flight within two seasons.
While he was unable to take Boro back into the Premier League during his last spell as manager, if he gets the job, he will no doubt be backing himself to achieve this feat.
