West Brom promotion chances shift in supercomputer prediction after Oxford United win

West Brom are still looking highly unlikely to be back in the Premier League any time soon.

West Brom secured a 2-1 victory at home to Oxford at the weekend, with Aune Heggebo scoring the decisive goal at The Hawthorns.

Will Lankshear opened the scoring for Oxford, but the turnaround from the Baggies was much-needed, given the form they have showcased this season.

As a result, their chances of achieving promotion have changed, though only marginally.

Another Championship campaign beckons for Albion

Ryan Mason remains under pressure at West Brom, and when taking into account their season to date, it’s not surprising.

The Baggies have won just six of their 15 encounters so far this campaign, which has them 14th in the Championship table.

As things stand, Albion are only four points away from the top six, which would see them in the play-offs, but eight points away from the top two.

After their win, Opta‘s supercomputer has slightly boosted West Brom’s chances of promotion, though the increase is barely noticeable.

Now, the Baggies have a 2.32 per cent chance of finishing in the top two, and a 14.88 per cent chance of making the play-offs.

A 13th-place finish has been predicted, with a total points tally of 63.

Where actually should West Brom be in the table?

Predicted tables say one thing, but expected tables are a true showcase of how a team has fared.

Unfortunately, in this instance, the Baggies are exactly where they should be based on the chances they’ve created and conceded.

Under Mason, Albion are underperforming their xG for and against by 0.5, but outside of that, they are deserving of their spot in 14th.

Typically, these tables showcase that a side has been unlucky, with Southampton expected to be fifth.

It isn’t the case for West Brom, and that demonstrates the task at hand for Mason, who needs to see a huge improvement after the international break.
