‘You can’t deny’ – Steve Hermon defends Aune Heggebo after West Brom win vs Oxford United

Steve Hermon has continued to back Aune Heggebo after his West Brom winner against Oxford United.

Heggebo was a big-money signing for West Brom in the summer, but he has struggled to find his feet since moving to The Hawthorns.

That isn’t unusual, and he isn’t alone in that as pressure continues to build on Ryan Mason as West Brom boss after 15 Championship games.

The Norway international silenced some doubters as he helped West Brom to a 2-1 win over Oxford United last time around.

Hermon has stood up for Heggebo and has done so once again after the striker finally found the net for the Baggies.

Steve Hermon backs Aune Heggebo after Oxford United goal

Heggebo was funny in his post-match interview at West Brom, but there has been little to laugh at with many of his performances this campaign.

The forward has always put work in and put himself about, but that has rarely turned into goals for the Albion.

He has now scored just twice in the second tier, grabbing his second with a terrific header against the U’s in his most recent outing.

Heggebo got across his man and headed home a superb effort to cap off a positive substitute appearance in the Black Country.

Hermon was full of praise for the number 19 as he took to X and said: “I was really pleased for Heggebo. You can’t deny he’s worked hard for the team during his run without a goal, and it showed on Saturday that if he’s given service, he can find the net.”

This contradicts the views of many supporters who remain uncertain about whether the 24-year-old can consistently pose a goal threat for B71.

The summer signing was afforded just 28 minutes of action at The Hawthorns, but certainly made a better show of himself than Josh Maja.

Heggebo got on the scoresheet as he took three shots on the day, representing a regular threat to Jamie Cumming’s goal.

Clocking up 0.29 expected goals in such a short period is a plus and should be seen as a positive aspect of his game against Gary Rowett’s side.

He capped off a good day’s work by winning four aerial duels, proving exactly why Mason brought him on. To make an impact.
