Jayson Molumby destroyed after ‘anonymous’ scenes away from West Brom
Jayson Molumby had an afternoon to forget despite the Republic of Ireland’s stunning win over Hungary.
West Brom star Molumby returned to the squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and Marco Rossi’s side.
Molumby did not feature in the 2-0 win over Portugal on 13 November, but he was brought back into the side for the second match of the international break.
The Irish produced a thrilling 3-2 comeback to book their place in the play-offs, where they will hope to qualify for the tournament in the United States.

Molumby slammed despite Ireland scenes
Molumby has been out injured for West Brom recently, and he was suspended for the famous win over the Portuguese.
It may have been a factor in this contest too, as he was seemingly not up to the standard, and kept Daniel Lukacs onside for the opener, a fact which was picked up on by the Irish media.
SportsJoe.ie handed him a rating of five out of 10, saying: “His stray leg kept Lukács onside for opener, but difficult to blame him for that. Was otherwise slightly anonymous as Ireland bypassed midfield regularly. Subbed off on the hour.”
Balls.ie agreed with that rating, saying: “Coming back into the side after missing the Portugal game due to suspension, Molumby’s lack of care in possession caused issues for Ireland on a couple of occasions.
Replaced after an hour as Ireland chased the game.”
RTE also gave Molumby a five out of 10, saying: “It seemed to be his back foot which was the unlucky body part that kept Daniel Lukacs onside for Hungary’s early opener when the forward had appeared, on initial viewing, to have strayed into an offside position.
“Adam Sallai ran off him on 25 minutes for the chance to meet the cross which saw Caoimhín Kelleher make an excellent save.”
Irish Examiner were a little more generous, handing him a 6, saying: “Replays suggested he had just about kept Lukacs onside for the opening goal. Did what he is good at well but was never going to be in a position where he could make an impact on Ireland going forward. Substituted on the hour.”
West Brom need Molumby to come back on form
Ryan Mason will hope that Molumby can put the bad showing behind him when the Baggies return to action against Coventry on 22 November.
- Molumby has missed four of the last five West Brom matches
- He featured for 28 minutes in the win over Oxford United last time out
- Mason needs him to be on top form going forward
The ex-Tottenham coach needs every man to be on top form, if the Baggies are going to have a chance of reigniting their promotion hopes against the Sky Blues.
They need Molumby to be running the show from the base of midfield, otherwise, they will likely get dominated by Frank Lampard’s side, who are sitting pretty at the top of the Championship.
Albion need a significant turnaround, and they need it quickly, and there will be concerns about Molumby after his latest showing away from The Hawthorns.
