Raphael Wicky ‘very close’ to West Brom job before serious Middlesbrough latest

Raphael Wicky has emerged as a serious contender for the Middlesbrough job after his links to West Brom earlier this year.

Rob Edwards praised West Brom before the two sides faced off earlier this Championship season.

West Brom suffered their second defeat against Middlesbrough in a 2-1 loss, where Aune Heggebo netted their only goal.

The former Luton Town manager has since moved to Wolves and the Premier League, which has left Boro scrambling to find a replacement.

Raphael Wicky almost coached West Brom

Wicky is emerging as a serious contender to take over at Middlesbrough.

The former Young Boys head coach was recently interviewed at Boro’s training ground and was “very close” to the West Brom job earlier this year, according to John Percy on 15 November.

Instead, Ryan Mason was appointed by West Brom and has had a rough start to life at The Hawthorns.

The former Tottenham midfielder started well and went unbeaten in his first four Championship games.

But the cracks began to show in mid-September, with the Baggies collecting just four points from their last five league games.

Carlos Corberan was linked to the Middlesbrough job earlier this month, and with the way things are going, some Baggies fans may already be craving his return.

Ryan Mason bought himself a little more time

Sack rumours have been rife this month as Albion fans watched their side slip to 14th in the table.

However, West Brom’s 2-1 triumph over Oxford United may have bought Mason a little more time at The Hawthorns.

It was probably one of their best second-half displays of the season, where the Baggies dominated after Will Lankshear opened the scoring for the away side.

It was also the first time this season that West Brom won a Championship game with majority possession. As a result, there were positive feelings about Mason before the international break.

Therefore, the former Spurs assistant coach is set to be given a chance to turn West Brom’s season around, with the intriguing match-up with Wicky possibly coming.
