Chris Mepham on verge of Championship ban ahead of Coventry vs West Brom

Chris Mepham could soon find himself suspended for one match if he picks up another yellow card in his next four matches.

The centre-back was brought into The Hawthorns in the summer and quickly established himself in the first team.

Since signing, Mepham has played in 11 out of 12 possible Championship matches, starting in 10 of them.

Mepham has often been praised for his performances at West Brom, but could now be on the verge of a suspension.

Chris Mepham single yellow card away from a one-match ban

As good as Mepham has been at West Brom, one potential issue has been his discipline.

To date, the centre-back has picked up four yellow cards in 11 Championship matches this season, averaging 0.36 a game.

Now, ahead of West Brom’s trip to Coventry, Mepham is at serious risk of suspension.

If the Welsh international is yellow-carded against Coventry or any of the following three fixtures, he will pick up a one-match ban.

How does the yellow card system work in the Championship?

Any player who is booked five times in the first 19 matches in the Championship will pick up a one-match ban.

However, after the 19th matchday, the card limit is extended to 10, with a two-match ban being in place if this is achieved.

If this is not achieved by matchday 33, players are once again let off, with the card limit being extended to 15. If a player hits this, they will receive a three-match ban, with this limit lasting until the end of the season.

Therefore, given his current yellow card rate, Mepham may find it difficult to avoid a suspension at some point this campaign.
