What Frank Lampard said about West Brom defeat last year couldn’t be further from reality today

Frank Lampard had nothing but good to say after West Brom beat his Coventry side last December.

Ryan Mason is under pressure at West Brom ahead of their encounter with high-flying Coventry on Saturday afternoon.

In comparison, Lampard’s position at Coventry is almost untouchable, given the fact that the Sky Blues sit top of the Championship, five points above Middlesbrough.

However, West Brom got the better of Coventry last December, and what Lampard said after that defeat showcases just how much has changed this season.

West Brom were praised for their character by Frank Lampard

Coventry are flying this season, though, by the same stage in the previous campaign, they sat in 17th place with just four wins.

West Brom occupied the top five, with 25 points from 15 games, and just two defeats.

Fast forward a year, and Albion have already lost six times under Mason, while the Sky Blues have suffered just one defeat.

Mason has a lot of issues to address at The Hawthorns, though one of the biggest ones is just how easy his side have been to beat recently, which wasn’t the case last year.

After Albion’s 2-0 win over Coventry last December, Lampard said: “They’re a strong team and a well-drilled outfit, a physically strong team. It’s important in this league to be based on that.

“Although it’s been a funny period for them, they’ve been robust and they don’t lose games. It’s a big strength.”

Almost none of them things hold any truth for West Brom this season, showcasing the downfall under Mason.

Brandon Thomas-Asante can pile more misery on West Brom

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s exit from West Brom left most unfazed, though, after the start he has made to the current campaign, it has many wondering if Albion made the wrong call.

With 10 goals in 15 games, Thomas-Asante is the joint leading scorer this season, having scored in all four of Coventry’s previous home games.

After his exit from The Hawthorns, he said: “I will cherish the connection with the Hawthorns crowd, it was an absolute honour to be the top scorer in my two seasons here.

“Going forward, I hope the fans can be fulfilled as the club continues on this trajectory, returning to the heights you all desire and deserve.

Unless things start to change under Mason, there is little chance of Albion returning to those heights, and a defeat on Saturday could spell the end of his tenure.
