Ex-West Brom midfielder agrees to join new Celtic backroom staff under Wilfried Nancy

Kwame Ampadu, who played as a midfielder for West Brom, has followed Wilfried Nancy to Celtic from Columbus Crew.

The ex-Baggie was the French manager’s assistant coach at the MLS outfit and will be part of his backroom staff at Parkhead.

While Celtic have had a turbulent few months, the Albion haven’t been in the best of periods either, with Ryan Mason’s future up in the air at The Hawthorns.

Jayson Molumby was the game-changer against Swansea, scoring an 85th-minute winner in the 3-2 win at home on 29 November, surely saving the former Tottenham coach’s blushes.

Kwame Ampadu record at West Brom

Ampadu initially joined West Brom on loan before completing a permanent switch in 1991, featuring for them in the third, second and first divisions.

The former midfielder spent three years at The Hawthorns between 1991 and 1994 before moving to Swansea City.

Over the 54-year-old’s spell with the Baggies, he made 62 appearances in all competitions for them, scoring five goals.

Ampadu had further stints at Leyton Orient, Newport County and Tiverton Town before eventually retiring in 2006.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international subsequently gained managerial experience in Arsenal’s youth setup before his assistant coaching roles at Monaco CF, Montreal, and Columbus Crew.

West Brom hoped to carry on the legacy with Leeds United captain Ethan Ampadu, the former midfielder’s son, but the Baggies failed to sign him from Chelsea in 2023.

Celtic backroom staff details emerge

Much like Nigel Gibbs assists Mason at The Hawthorns, Ampadu will undoubtedly play a similar role for Nancy at Celtic.

Fitness coach Jules Gueguen and video performance coach Maxime Chalier have also reunited with the former Columbus Crew boss at Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers’ resignation was a shock to many, but O’Neill has managed to steady the ship in Glasgow, and it will be interesting to see what the former West Brom midfielder will now be able to achieve with Nancy at the Scottish outfit.

It will also be interesting to see whether the connection with Ampadu will lead to a better relationship with Celtic in B71 in terms of cooperation and transfers.
