Ryan Mason signs off on own West Brom sack after crazy call at Loftus Road

Ryan Mason has essentially asked for the sack at West Brom after his lineup gamble did not pay off in the 3-1 defeat to QPR.

The manager made five changes from the Swansea match as the Baggies proceeded to be well beaten by the London side.

Few West Brom players played well against QPR, with Aune Heggebo arguably the only one who put in a solid display.

With West Brom now on a streak of six consecutive away losses for the first time since 2022, serious questions need to be asked of Mason, who was already under pressure at The Hawthorns.

Ryan Mason’s lineup threw the QPR match

While many of Mason’s changes in the lineup were needed, with Englishman giving starts to those who were excellent against Swansea off the bench, the manager made too many too quickly.

The most baffling addition was Joe Wildsmith, who hadn’t started a league game since April.

While Josh Griffiths hasn’t been great for West Brom this season, to throw the backup keeper straight into an important away game was laughable.

Therefore, it came as no surprise that Wildsmith made an error that led to a goal, only made one save and let in three in the process.

In truth, it appears that the manager does not even know his best starting XI

With West Brom now 16th, five points off the playoffs, Mason’s tactical blunder has now potentially cost him his job.

A change may well be needed if the Black Country outfit has any hope of recovering what has been a terrible season to date.

What has Ryan Mason said after the QPR defeat?

After the match, Mason was obviously not impressed with the display.

It is yet another poor result under the Englishman, just when the Baggies looked to have turned a corner.

Reflecting on the game, Mason was quick the criticise the manner in which the goals were conceded at Loftus Road.

He told BBC WM, on 6 December: “In the first half we were far too passive, and to concede just before half-time wasn’t ideal, but we came out in the second half and showed a bit more intent, a bit more bravery, a bit more energy, and a bit more quality.

“But we gifted them the second goal, which you just can’t do. Then we got ourselves back in the game again and were playing OK but the third goal was super disappointing as well.

“The formula isn’t there at the moment away from home, that’s for sure, and we need to try and change.”
