West Brom fans rage over ‘pathetic’ George Campbell moment in loss vs QPR
George Campbell has been crucified on social media in the aftermath of West Brom’s 3-1 defeat to QPR on Saturday.
West Brom’s sixth consecutive away defeat has left Ryan Mason under a wave of scrutiny as the Baggies slipped to 16th in the Championship table.
Rumarn Burrell’s double compelled Mason’s side to another defeat on the road, and the performance highlighted their defensive frailties once more.
Campbell left CF Montreal to join the Baggies in the summer, and he has made 16 appearances under Mason so far.
Campbell has impressed in moments for West Brom, although his atrocious defending for QPR’s third goal left supporters furious after the match.
George Campbell crucified by fans after what he did for Rumarn Burnell’s second goal
With West Brom 2-1 down and desperately searching for an equaliser, Campbell produced a moment of madness that ruined their chances of a comeback.
A long ball forward was contested between Richard Kone and Campbell, and even though the ball was behind the Albion man, he continued to grapple with the QPR forward.
Kone evaded the challenge and fired a low ball into the box, which was poorly dealt with by Joe Wildsmith, and Burrell was on hand to score again.
West Brom defender Campbell has already been criticised for his lapses in concentration, and it proved costly once more at Loftus Road.
According to FotMob, Campbell won only 50 per cent of ground duels and zero per cent of his aerial duels.
Despite registering two shots on target, supporters were ruthless when criticising him online.
One fan branded the 24-year-old “pathetic”, and didn’t hold back on West Brom‘s defensive performance.
Despite the fact Wildsmith failed to deal with Kone’s cross, another fan was quick to point out Campbell’s inability to clear the ball.
This has probably been Campbell’s worst performance in a West Brom shirt, and it fans are already calling for a new addition at right-back.
Alfie Gilchrist and George Campbell not good enough for West Brom
Mason has persisted with George Campbell at right-back, despite the fact that he is naturally a centre-back, and his deputy Alfie Gilchrist hasn’t fared much better.
The former Chelsea man has only played six times this season, and it’s clear that Mason doesn’t trust him at all.
It’s clear that Darnell Furlong hasn’t been properly replaced, and it’s become a major weak spot for the defensive unit.
The Baggies travel to Southampton on Tuesday, and Campbell must pick himself up ahead of a tough battle against in-form winger Leo Scienza.
