Michael Carrick installed as favourite to be next West Brom manager after Ryan Mason sack news

Ryan Mason is hanging by a thread at West Brom, and former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick has emerged as a possible contender to replace him.

It’s now one win from Mason’s last four Championship games after West Brom were beaten 3-1 by Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

As a result, the Baggies are now five points adrift of the playoffs in 16th, with Mason odds on to be sacked at West Brom following an inconsistent start to life at The Hawthorns.

Worryingly for the former Tottenham man, West Brom visit high-flying Southampton on Tuesday evening, and a bad result could at St Mary’s could spell the end of his time in the Midlands.

Michael Carrick is the favourite to replace Ryan Mason at West Brom

West Brom fans have urged Mason to be sacked following their capitulation at the hands of QPR, and several interesting names could replace him.

According to the odds, Michael Carrick is 7/2 favourite to succeed the 34-year-old, followed by Carlos Corberan (5/1), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (7/1) and Russell Martin (7/1).

Carrick being the favourite comes as no surprise, as the former Manchester United midfielder was sacked by Middlesbrough in June after failing to finish in the play-offs.

The 44-year-old led Boro to a 10th-place finish last season after narrowly missing out on the top six in 2023/24, with Rob Edwards replacing him in the dugout.

Since then, Middlesbrough established themselves as promotion contenders, before Edwards jumped ship to join Wolves, with Kim Hellberg handed the baton.

What Carrick has previously said about West Brom

When discussing possible new managers, West Brom fans are open to the idea of Carrick joining, and the promising young manager will perhaps jump at the opportunity.

Carrick will be chomping at the bit to take charge of a team with playoff aspirations, and will arguably feel he can get this squad firing more than Mason can.

Speaking in October 2024 ahead of his Middlesbrough side facing the Baggies, the Englishman was complimentary of their promotion chances.

“If you look at them, they have a really strong team, physically, experience-wise, they have good quality,” he said.

“They’re a force in this league and I think they’ll be up there come the end of the season. This league throws up results from week to week but I think come the end of the season they’ll definitely be up there.”
