West Brom fans will love what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once said about Baggies sacking as he’s linked with job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once expressed his sadness that Slaven Bilic had been sacked from West Brom back in 2020.

Plenty of rumours are circulating at The Hawthorns at present, with Ryan Mason under pressure after a series of bad results.

If sacked, he will be the latest in a long line of managers who have been unable to return the Baggies to the Premier League.

The last to achieve this was Bilic, who was perhaps unfairly sacked by West Brom during the 2020-21 campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sad when Slaven Bilic was sacked by West Brom

Bilic is no doubt still a popular figure at the Baggies.

The manager was at West Brom for just over a year and achieved his objective of guiding the club back to the Premier League.

Fans’ fondness for Bilic is still evident, with supporters chanting his name during the 3-2 defeat to Southampton on Tuesday.

Now, with Solskjaer one of the favourites to take over at West Brom if Mason is sacked, the Manchester United legend will have already won plenty of fans over with his view of Bilic.

He told TNT Sports on 16 December 2020: “I think these times in a pandemic and what’s happened has made everyone sit back and think… I’m very sad to hear Slaven has lost his job. He did a great job getting them promotion.”

“I’ve known him for years and I’m sure he’ll get a job again.

“Hopefully, more and more clubs will think long term. It’s a short-term business, and you need short-term results, but everyone knows that continuity is the key to success and sometimes they don’t have the patience for it.”

This type of statement is exactly what will win over fans at The Hawthorns.

West Brom need a manager everyone can rally behind, and Solskjaer could easily be the man to do this.

Solskjaer’s managerial career explained

As it stands, Solskjaer is unemployed, with the Norwegian leaving Besiktas in August after failing to reach the Europa Conference League’s league stage.

While his spell in Turkey wasn’t too successful, previously, he had overseen a near-three-year period at Man United where he reached a Europa League final.

While he was eventually sacked, his time at the club is now viewed as quite successful, especially given the Red Devils’ drastic drop off since.

On top of this, at both his last two clubs, he has commanded over a 51 per cent win rate.

However, it remains to be seen if the Baggies look to go in for Solskjaer if there is a vacancy.
