West Brom playoff chances predicted by supercomputer after Sheffield United win
West Brom look set to miss out on the playoffs despite their 2-0 win over Sheffield United on Friday.
Ryan Mason eased pressure on his West Brom job with the victory at The Hawthorns over Chris Wilder’s side.
West Brom are targeting a playoff place, but sit six points off the final spot, which is currently occupied by Hull City.
Anything can happen in the Championship, but they are not fancied to bridge that gap before the campaign concludes.
What does Opta think about West Brom’s playoff chances
The Baggies are seeking a return to the Premier League, but is it genuinely possible?
Mathematically, it is, but the Opta Analyst supercomputer does not believe that it is a realistic ambition despite the win over the Blades.
Albion are predicted to finish 15th, finishing with 61.32 points, and have an 8.28 per cent chance of promotion via the post-season showcase.
| Position | Percentage |
| Title | 0.02% |
| Promotion | 0.26% |
| Playoffs | 8.28% |
| Relegation | 2.8% |
They also have a 2.8 per cent chance of relegation to League One.
How can West Brom qualify for the playoffs?
A six-point gap is not actually that big, but the issue for the Baggies may be the number of teams between them and the Tigers.
There are eight other clubs fighting for that final playoff place that sit ahead of the Throstles in the table at the moment.
They need to be more consistent than those teams, which is not encouraging at the moment, as Mason’s side are solid at home but atrocious on the road.
One positive is the form of Aune Heggebo, who has seven goals in his last seven appearances, but they cannot rely solely on his contributions.
They need key players like Nat Phillips, Jayson Molumby and Isaac Price to step up constantly, rather than showing good form in flashes.
Only then, will the B71 outfit have any chance of potentially securing a playoff berth, but it seems like a long shot right now.
Shilen Patel and Co. may end up making a change in the dugout, if they feel like the club are not going to get anywhere near their ambition, or they may end up giving Mason time to fix the issues that he inherited.
Only time will tell.
