Supercomputer predicts result of Hull City vs West Brom in Championship showdown

West Brom are aiming to build some momentum over the festive period, whilst Ryan Mason wants to avoid the sack.

A terrible recent run of results came to an end on Friday after West Brom beat Sheffield United 2-0 to move six points behind the top six.

According to Opta, West Brom have an eight per cent chance of finishing in the play-offs come May, and Mason can improve that percentage by following up their win against the Blades with another positive performance.

The Baggies travel to sixth-place Hull City on Saturday, and the Tigers are fresh from an impressive 3-1 victory over Millwall last weekend, with Sergej Jakirovic working wonders in East Yorkshire.

Hull City are favourites to beat West Brom

To boost their chances of challenging for the top six, Mason’s men must turn up against a Hull side who have lost two of their last three matches at home.

Interestingly, West Brom are unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 matches against the Tigers, last tasting defeat at the MKM Stadium in March 2023.

But current form and league position mean Hull are favourites heading into this showdown, and Opta’s supercomputer thinks the hosts will secure all three points, condemning the Baggies to another loss.

Mason will have to figure out a way to shut down the league’s second-best attack this weekend, although City’s defensive frailties at least give the visitors hope at the other end.

Hull City have the second worst defence in the Championship

Hull play a brand of high pressing, fast-paced style of football, and that often leaves them vulnerable to the transition.

The Tigers may occupy a play-off position, as it stands, but they’ve conceded the second most goals in the Championship (35), with only bottom side Sheffield Wednesday shipping more (40).

West Brom have the pace and power in transition to hurt the hosts, and Mason has already praised in-form striker Aune Heggebo.

The Norwegian has scored seven goals in as many games, including braces against Coventry City and Swansea City.

Heggebo’s clinical finishing will be key to their chances of securing a priceless away win. However, West Brom will also need to stop individual errors to prevent one of the league’s best attacks from blowing them away.
