Portsmouth fans are now saying exactly what West Brom fans thought they would about John Swift

John Swift is not enjoying a fruitful start to his Portsmouth career.

Swift was released by West Brom this summer, having endured his least productive season in a Baggies shirt.

It had looked as though Portsmouth were going to pass on signing Swift after his West Brom exit, but he eventually penned a deal at Fratton Park.

Swift made his return to the Hawthorns with Portsmouth in August, on an afternoon in which Ryan Mason‘s side had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

West Brom fans warned Portsmouth supporters about Swift as the deal was materialising, and they’ll certainly be feeling vindicated.

Portsmouth fans tear into John Swift as West Brom warnings come true

Portsmouth are treading water in the Championship this season.

John Mousinho’s men are currently sitting 21st in the second tier, just one place and point above the relegation zone.

Scoring goals has been a major issue for Pompey, with just 17 scored in 20 games, and this has seen the team’s forward players come in for heavy criticism from Portsmouth fans.

Swift is coming under major fire too, as he’s struggled to make any sizeable impact so far this term.

One West Brom fan said: “Day one of tweeting until John Swift retires.”

Another West Brom supporter wrote: “John Swift was a free agent for a reason.”

Swift’s West Brom exit has massively helped Isaac Price flourish into Baggies talisman

West Brom waved goodbye to numerous ‘big-name’ players this summer, with the likes of Tom Fellows, Darnell Furlong, Torbjorn Heggem and Kyle Bartley being among them.

Swift, despite his disappointing 2024-25 season, was also one of those high-profile names to leave the club, and it looks to have been a great decision by the Albion hierarchy for more than simply moving on an ageing and unproductive player from the wage bill.

The Hawthorns has a new hero now, and he goes by the name of Isaac Price.

Price has taken full control of the creative cog role in the attacking midfield area of Mason’s team, bagging five goals and two assists in 21 Championship games so far this season.

However, that same level of production wasn’t quite there during the second half of last season after signing from Standard Liege, despite the fact he was still performing very well in his first few months.

Price registered just one goal and one assist in 15 league games last term, but with Swift out of the picture, he’s firmly stepped up into the lead role in Albion’s attack, and is now without question one of the best attacking midfielders in the Championship.
