Sergej Jakirovic could not believe what happened to West Brom player vs Hull City
Ryan Mason saw his West Brom side fall to yet another away defeat at Hull City on Saturday, but he can maybe count himself slightly unlucky.
Nat Phillips gave away a first-half penalty, which was duly converted by Oli McBurnie as the Baggies were beaten 1-0 at the MKM Stadium.
Isaac Price missed a sitter for West Brom, who spurned multiple opportunities to breach the Hull defence, but ultimately succumbed to an eighth consecutive loss on their travels.
The Midlands side remains 16th in the Championship, but are now seven points adrift of the play-off places.
West Brom on wrong end of ‘very harsh’ decision
With West Brom pushing to find a way back into the contest, Mason brought on Alfie Gilchrist to replace George Campbell midway through the second half.
Just eight minutes after making his way onto the pitch, Gilchrist caught Hull winger Liam Millar with a late challenge.
To the shock of many at the MKM Stadium, referee Ruebyn Ricardo produced a straight red card, ending the defender’s afternoon and reducing the Baggies to 10 men.
After the game, Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic admitted that he was surprised that Gilchrist had been sent off, as he felt the challenge had only been worthy of a yellow card.

Speaking via the Sunday People, Jakirovic said: “It was very harsh. I was a bit surprised because I was thinking it was a yellow card. But he pulled out a red.”
Ryan Mason reacts to Alfie Gilchrist decision
Unsurprisingly, Mason agreed with Jakirovic’s view on the decision, believing that Gilchrist’s challenge was not deserving of the red card it received.
The Baggies boss highlighted the lack of reaction from the Hull players and how long it took the referee to send the defender off.
Mason said: “I think you can always tell by the player reactions. I don’t think anyone reacted. The referee was 10 yards away, and it took him 15 seconds to give the red card.”
Regardless of Gilchrist’s dismissal, West Brom have now lost three out of their last four games in the Championship, and their faint hopes of reaching the play-offs are growing even slimmer by the week.
Mason was under big pressure before the trip to Hull, and rumours will continue regarding the 34-year-old’s future after another abject performance.
