Tony Mowbray has already said why West Brom should sign Dan Neil from Sunderland

Dan Neil is a fringe player at the Stadium of Light.

After yet another defeat, the main focus is on Ryan Mason’s future as West Brom boss, and things aren’t looking good in that regard.

However, the Baggies can’t let that uncertainty linger into January, with a huge transfer window approaching if they are to make it into the play-offs.

Several players have already been linked with a move to The Hawthorns, including Neil, whom Tony Mowbray is a big fan of.

Neil has something that West Brom are lacking

It wasnt long ago that Neil was being linked with a move to Liverpool, having been labelled as the next Jordan Henderson.

Instead, he stayed at Sunderland and captained his side back to the Premier League for the first time since 2016, where they have since thrived and already look safe from relegation.

However, that success has come at a cost for Neil, with the 24-year-old yet to start a game in the Premier League.

As a result, that lack of gametime has seen Neil linked with a move to West Brom, and after Mowbray praised his leadership skills, it’s a deal that would make sense.

Back in 2023, when Neil was mooted as the new Sunderland captain, Mowbray said: “Yeah, I think [he is ready]

“As I said to you earlier, he’s starting to show real leadership qualities on the grass around the position he plays.

“Understanding how we need to push in around the ball, or we need to get tucked in off the side, or we need to sit off a bit here, how we roll people into different areas. He understands football, and he can make it happen on the grass rather than me screaming like an idiot for 90 minutes.

West Brom need to sign Neil in January

West Brom lack leaders, and while Mason will take the blame for their struggles, that is also a major reason behind it.

Despite his age, Neil would bring that to The Hawthorns, as well as already having the experience of getting promoted from the Championship, which, again, is something lacking in this current side.

The Englishman is out of contract in the summer, and if a loan deal could be arranged until the end of the season, it may also place the Baggies at the front of the queue to sign him permanently, which would be a huge addition.
