Mark Halsey facepalms at West Brom footage as unpopular announcement made

Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey could not contain his surprise at an announcement shared by West Brom concerning Alfie Gilchrist’s red card.

Gilchrist was issued a straight red card in West Brom’s 1-0 loss to Hull City at MKM Stadium on Saturday.

The former Chelsea player had only been on the field for around 10 minutes when dismissed for a foul on Liam Millar.

Ruebyn Ricardo deemed Gilchrist’s challenge on Millar to fall into the serious foul play category and reached into his back pocket.

Even Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic felt the decision to send off Gilchrist was harsh, though, and West Brom subsequently lodged an appeal.

West Brom fail with Alfie Gilchrist red card appeal

It was widely expected that West Brom would be successful with their appeal, given footage appeared to show Gilchrist making no contact with his opponent.

That was not the case, however, and Albion confirmed via their official website on Tuesday that they had been unsuccessful with their appeal.

West Brom fans were understandably not happy with the unpopular announcement, with some even joking they wanted to appeal the appeal.

Retired former FIFA-listed referee Halsey was among those to have his say on the announcement, simply posting a facepalm emoji and a shrugging shoulders emoji via X in reaction to the footage.

What matches will Alfie Gilchrist now miss for West Brom?

Gilchrist’s West Brom career has yet to truly take off, and that will not be helped by this red card and subsequent three-match ban.

The 22-year-old has started just four matches for the Baggies since joining in the summer, while making a further three appearances from the substitutes’ bench.

Gilchrist for West Brom

He will now play no part in West Brom’s Christmas and New Year’s fixtures, which will see Ryan Mason’s men face Bristol City and QPR at The Hawthorns, followed by a trip to Swansea City.

Gilchrist will be back for the showdown away at Leicester City on 5 January, at which point he will hopefully be fit and raring to go to finally make an impact.
