West Brom hold Boxing Day record no other English club can match

West Brom face a home showdown against Bristol City on Boxing Day, and the Baggies need a response to their loss at Hull City.

On his return to the MKM Stadium, Ryan Mason watched on from the sidelines as West Brom were beaten 1-0 by Hull City, thanks to Oli McBurnie’s first-half penalty.

Defeat in East Yorkshire piled further pressure onto Mason, who is facing the sack at West Brom if their form doesn’t turn around.

The Baggies have won just two of their last seven Championship matches, and as it stands, sit seven points behind the play-offs.

West Brom hold record for most Boxing Day matches

When West Brom host Bristol City on Friday, Mason will order a response from his squad to their lacklustre loss at Hull.

The Robins are five points above the Midlands side in the table, with the hosts seeing this fixture as an opportunity to close the gap and get their top-six hopes back on track.

Supporters will also be aware that the Baggies hold the record of most games played on Boxing Day than any other club, with this year’s being their 108th, as per Opta.

Albion have won 46 of their 107 matches so far, and remarkably, only Manchester United have claimed more victories (54).

23 matches
8 wins
4 draws
11 losses

To ease the sack pressure off Mason and inject some hope into the fanbase, fans will only be happy with all three points on Friday.

Mason’s odds to be sacked at West Brom

West Brom’s aim of finishing in the play-offs could pass them by if they don’t put a consistent run together, and that could ultimately lead to Mason losing his job.

The 34-year-old is under threat by the board to transform results, otherwise, he could become the next Championship casualty.

Mason is 11/4 odds to be sacked following Gary Rowett’s dismissal from Oxford United, with Birmingham City’s Chris Davies the current favourite.

It seems the Christmas period could either make or break Albion’s season. Failure to beat Bristol City, QPR, Swansea City and Leicester City could leave him on the brink of the exit door, and few could argue against that decision.

However, a run of wins between now and the clash with Leicester on January 5 could propel West Brom back into the play-off picture and save Mason’s skin.
