Man United make final Toby Collyer decision at West Brom as injury latest revealed

Toby Collyer’s loan spell at West Brom certainly didn’t go to plan.

The 21-year-old featured in 12 Championship games under Ryan Mason, becoming a bright spark in midfield since moving to The Hawthorns on loan from Man United.

However, Collyer suffered a calf injury in the 1-1 draw with Birmingham on 26 November and he has not played since.

Collyer returned to Man United for rehabilitation, and it has just been revealed that his loan spell has been cut short by his parent club.

Toby Collyer recalled by Man United due to serious calf injury

Collyer impressed in the 3-0 defeat to Millwall on 4 October, and despite only making three starts, he was full of energy every time he played under Mason.

The Athletic reports that Collyer has now been officially recalled from his loan at West Brom by Man United.

Collyer had already returned to Carrington training ground for treatment on a calf injury that will keep him out for a further eight weeks.

Man United have decided not to send him back when he regains fitness, and he could provide competition for the first team should out-of-favour midfielder Kobbie Mainoo leave Old Trafford.

The Baggies now have just Ousmane Diakite, Jayson Molumby, and Alex Mowatt as holding midfield options, and there is a desperate need for them to bring in depth immediately.

Is Bailey Rice a good replacement for Toby Collyer?

Bailey Rice is linked with a move to West Brom, with Aston Villa and Cardiff City also interested in the 19-year-old.

His contract at Rangers runs out in the summer, and the Baggies are interested in discussing a pre-contract agreement with the midfielder, but they will have to wait until January.

Mason needs a midfielder now, and it could be in West Brom’s interest to pay a fee for Rice to have him available for the second half of the season.

The midfielder has rarely featured for the Scottish giants, although he has an abundance of potential, and the Championship could be the perfect place for his career to take off.

The Baggies must do everything they can to sign Rice, and they may be reaping the financial rewards in the years to come.
