Mikey Johnston has gone completely under the radar for what he’s achieved with West Brom

Mikey Johnston should be the first name on the teamsheet for West Brom this season.

West Brom secured a 2-1 victory against QPR at The Hawthorns on Monday, in a game that has more than likely extended Ryan Mason’s stay.

However, it also brought the Baggies one point closer to the play-off positions, with the gap now at seven points.

George Campbell opened the scoring for West Brom, with Nat Phillips bagging the winner courtesy of an assist from Johnston, which showcased exactly why he deserves more attention.

West Brom star leads way for key Championship metric

Inconsistency has marred West Brom‘s campaign, and while Mason holds a lot of the blame for that, several players also need to take a look at their own performances.

However, one player who has rarely emerged as a weak spot is Johnston, who has started 19 of the 23 games he has featured in for West Brom this campaign.

Within those games, the Republic of Ireland international has two goals and nine assists, and the latter actually makes him the top assister in the entire Championship.

Ryan Giles is second to Johnston with eight assists, but it just goes to how overlooked his impact truly has been this season.

This is already his best campaign in terms of goal contributions, and it’s about time that more people give him the respect he deserves.

Johnston’s stats from this season demonstrate his value

Johnston can be a frustrating player at times, though that is the nature of being a winger in modern football.

If you arent frustarting, you simply aren’t doing your job.

A lot of that stems from his dribbling. Johnston has completed 44 dribbles this season, according to FotMob, with a success rate of 51.8 per cent, which is actually remarkably high.

The 26-year-old has played 1629 minutes in the Championship this season, and he has created a remarkable 38 chances, which places him in the top 96.2 per cent of players in the division.

He’s also completed more crosses than any other player in the Championship.

Johnston is untouchable at West Brom this season, and yet no one has been talking about it.
