Ryan Mason sacked: Ex-Championship boss installed favourite to be next West Brom manager

Ryan Mason has been sacked by West Brom after their late defeat at Leicester on Monday night.

Despite outplaying Leicester in what was one of Albion’s best performances of the season, they still walked away empty-handed from the King Power, losing 2-1 thanks to a 94th-minute goal by Abdul Fatawu.

The Baggies have now lost each of their last 10 away games, an unwanted feat not seen at the Black Country club in 99 years.

West Brom’s defeat to Leicester now leaves them 18th in the Championship table, 10 points away from the play-off positions and just seven points shy of Norwich in the relegation zone.

As a result, Mason has been dismissed by the board.

Ex-Championship managers lead race for West Brom job

Mason has been under pressure at The Hawthorns for what feels like months.

The former Tottenham coach was hired in the summer to replace Tony Mowbray, but his appointment only seemed to worsen the results Albion suffered under their previous manager, who saw a play-off bid derailed in the second half of the 2024-25 campaign.

Shilen Patel and Andrew Nestor have now decided to pull the trigger and begin Bilkul’s third search for a new manager as West Brom’s owners.

But who’s in the running to replace Mason?

As it stands, former Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick is in pole position for the West Brom job, being installed as the 11/4 favourite.

Carlos Corberan is struggling at Valencia and facing the sack there, meaning that he’s been made the 9/1 second-favourite.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Russell Martin are then both in at 6/1.

Another ex-West Brom boss also in the bookies’ thinking is Slaven Bilic. However, he’s a 12/1 outsider right now and is also being linked with taking charge at West Ham if they sack Nuno Espirito Santo.

Ryan Mason not the only person to leave The Hawthorns after Leicester loss

As confirmed in West Brom’s official statement, Mason was relieved of his duties on Tuesday after the late defeat in the East Midlands.

Nigel Gibbs and Sam Pooley have also left The Hawthorns.

West Brom hero James Morrison will now lead first-team training and manage the team on an interim basis until Mason’s replacement is hired.

Bilkul Football have so far hired Mowbray and Mason as managers during their ownership of the Black Country club.

Combined, those two managers have won just 14 out of 44 matches.
