Ralph Hasenhuttl ‘No 1 candidate’ for West Brom job as fans ‘thrilled’ with ex-Southampton boss news
Ralph Hasenhuttl is the latest name to be tipped for West Brom’s vacant managerial role.
Shilen Patel decided to axe Ryan Mason on Tuesday following West Brom‘s late 2-1 defeat at the King Power Stadium to Leicester City.
Some would argue that Mason’s sacking was inevitable due to the direction that the Baggies were headed under the Englishman, as Patel and Co. may have already had replacements in mind.
Russell Martin has been linked with the West Brom job, with former Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick also under consideration.
However, Baggies supporters have now taken to social media, with a growing consensus around the idea of ex-Southampton boss Hasenhuttl coming to The Hawthorns.
West Brom fans would be ‘thrilled’ with Ralph Hasenhuttl
Hasenhuttl’s last job in management was with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, and it remains to be seen whether or not the Austrian would drop down to coach in England’s second tier.
The 58-year-old found success in the Premier League with Southampton over a nearly four-year stay with the Saints.
- Hasenhuttl left Wolfsburg in May of 2025
- He was Southampton boss from December 2018 until November 2022
- Hasenhuttl is a free agent
Plenty of names are flying around at the moment, but West Brom fans may be anticipating their hierarchy to pursue someone who is not currently in a job already.
Albion supporters gathered on X, and shared their collective thoughts on the potential appointment of Hasenhuttl after he emerged as a 5/2 front-runner for the job with a major bookmaker.
One Baggies fan said: “I’d be thrilled with him.”
Another Albion fan said: “The club needs a big appointment this time round to make a real statement after the last two mess-ups. Hassenhuttl certainly does that for me.”
What is Ralph Hasenhuttl’s track record like?
Hasenhutll’s time at Wolfsburg came to an end after an eight-game run without wins, and he will want to prove doubters wrong at his next club.
However, the experienced manager has still seen success in his coaching career, as he guided Southampton to their highest Premier League points tally with 54 points in the 2019-20 campaign.
The Austrian averaged 1.26 points per game with Southampton, according to GiveMeSport, and managed the Saints for a respectable amount of time.
But he was also in charge of both of Southampton’s biggest ever defeats, with a 9-0 loss coming against Leicester in the 2019-20 season, and another 9-0 defeat against Manchester United the following campaign.
Regardless, if Albion were able to pull off the appointment of Hasenhuttl, it would be one of the Patels’ biggest moves yet.
