What Erik ten Hag once said about Eric Ramsay will surely excite West Brom fans

West Brom are searching for their successor to Ryan Mason, and Eric Ramsay has caught the eye of former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

West Brom confirmed the sacking of Mason following their last-gasp defeat to Leicester City on Monday night, with the Baggies marooned in the bottom half of the Championship table.

Michael Carrick emerged as the initial favourite to succeed Mason at The Hawthorns, but Andrew Nestor and Shilen Patel are considering other names.

Eric Ramsay has emerged on West Brom’s radar once more after he was linked in the summer, and the Minnesota United boss is held in high regard.

Erik ten Hag has already praised Eric Ramsay

Ramsay has a strong managerial background, holding roles as a first-team coach with Chelsea’s under-23s and becoming the youngest British coach to achieve the UEFA Pro Licence before joining Manchester United in 2021.

The Welshman was hired as a player development coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was an integral part of the set-up under Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag.

During his time at Old Trafford, he helped integrate foreign players such as Casemiro into the club due to his ability to speak fluent French and Spanish.

Unsurprisingly, he was thought highly of by his players and colleagues at United, including Ten Hag, who labelled Ramsay as a ‘really talented’ coach.

“I think it is great,” the Dutchman said via the Man United website in March 2023. “Eric is a really talented coach, and he is progressing a lot.

“He is ambitious and this will happen, and it will improve him and help him to get new experiences, but also it will improve Manchester United as he will bring experiences back in our coaching.”

Ramsay ended up leaving Man United in February 2024 to take on a managerial role at Minnesota United, and the promising coach could return to England with West Brom.

What has Ramsay achieved at Minnesota United

The appointment of a young manager in Mason, someone with limited managerial experience, has probably put people off the idea of Ramsay moving to The Hawthorns.

But the 33-year-old has garnered a solid reputation in the US after guiding Minnesota to a sixth-place and fourth-place finish in his first two campaigns in charge.

Eric Ramsay’s Minnesota United record
81 matches
38 wins
16 draws
27 losses

Minnesota even reached the U.S. Open Cup semifinals in 2025, but were unfortunately knocked out after losing to Austin in extra time.

The only thing perhaps missing from his tenure with the Loons is a piece of silverware, although going trophyless shouldn’t be a barometer of his success, and there is every reason to believe he could be a successful appointment if hired.
