West Brom ready to pounce on Hull City troubles in possible first post-Ryan Mason transfer

Managerless West Brom are pressing on with their January recruitment drive.

West Brom lost 2-1 to Leicester on Monday night, with Ryan Mason sacked a matter of hours after the full-time whistle at the King Power Stadium.

Shilen Patel wants to name Albion’s next manager swiftly, as he looks to give his new man enough time to assess the squad and get some of his signings through the door.

Michael Carrick has been linked with the West Brom job, whilst Minnesota United boss Eric Ramsay is also a ‘strong contender’ for Albion.

West Brom could pounce for Remy Descamps ahead of Hull

Typically, as for reasons mentioned above, a club will pause their transfer dealings until they’ve appointed a new manager in order to avoid bringing in/letting go of players that the new coach may not/have wanted to work with.

However, West Brom don’t appear to be putting their January business on hold following Mason’s sacking, as they look to try and pull away from the relegation battle they’re being dragged into.

As per a report from L’Equipe, West Brom are interested in a move for Lyon goalkeeper Remy Descamps, with the 29-year-old understood to be seeking more regular playing time away from the French club.

Championship rivals Hull City are also said to be keen on the former PSG youngster, but are unable to make a permanent move for him this winter due to their transfer ban that won’t be lifted until the summer.

As such, West Brom could have an easy run at Descamps if they are to firm up their interest, but it remains to be seen whether a switch to The Hawthorns would interest him.

Would Remy Descamps be a good fit for West Brom?

At 29, Descamps is still firmly in the prime years of his career as a goalkeeper, and has some major pedigree to his name.

Having spent a number of years developing in PSG’s academy system as a young player, he eventually moved to Belgian side Sporting Charleroi in the summer of 2019 on a permanent basis, before spending three years back in France with Nantes until his move to Lyon in the summer of 2024.

When handed the opportunity to play for Lyon this season, he’s done well, keeping three clean sheets from his four Ligue 1 games in 2025-26.

As per FotMob, he’s averaging a 7.5/10 rating per league match, has a 76.9 save percentage, has made no errors that have led to goals and has prevented 1.84 goals.

So, with Josh Griffiths and Joe Wildsmith looking unconvincing this season, West Brom could far worse than taking a chance on Descamps.
