West Brom’s managerial timeline revealed as Jon Dahl Tomasson emerges as one of three candidates
Former Blackburn and Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson is a potential candidate to replace Ryan Mason at West Brom.
West Brom’s promotion chances are slipping away at a rapid pace, and the only way they can put an end to that is by hiring a new manager.
Eric Ramsay has been named as a leading candidate for the role at The Hawthorns, with the Minnesota boss said to have already landed in the UK for talks.
However, his appointment is far from a foregone conclusion, with a new candidate emerging in the form of Tomasson.
This is when West Brom want to hire a new manager
Albion sit 18th in the Championship after 26 games, having accumulated just 31 points in that period.
However, despite having no consistency under Mason, West Brom are still just 10 points away from Hull City, who currently occupy the final play-off spot.
That could, of course, change when West Brom face Middlesbrough on 16 January, which is the game that the Baggies hope to have a new manager installed.
That is according to Sportsboom, who have reported that Tomasson is one of three managers now being considered for the role, alongside Ramsay and one other unnamed candidate.
Tomasson departed Blackburn Rovers in February 2024, before taking on the role as Sweden boss, before he would eventually get sacked.
Why Jon Dahl Tomasson would be an interesting appointment
Many will look at Tomasson’s failure as Sweden manager and the tactical flaws that saw him leave that role after facing a lot of backlash.
However, the 49-year-old did a fine job at Blackburn, in much more challenging circumstances than the ones he would face if he were to move to West Brom.
Tomasson’s record at Blackburn
- 90 matches
- 41 wins
- 13 draws
- 36 defeats
- 147 goals scored
- 1.51 PPG
He brought out the best of the players he had at his disposal, which has to be the first step for whoever takes over at The Hawthorns.
Ironically, Tomasson used the foundations left by Tony Mowbray to build something far more competitive at Blackburn, which would be a similar task to the one he faces here.
Contrary to plenty of performances this season, Albion have plenty of talent in their squad, and he has shown an ability to maximise it as a manager.
