West Brom agree compo package to hire Ryan Mason successor
West Brom have been looking for a new head coach since Ryan Mason was sacked on Tuesday.
Leicester City beat West Brom 2-1 on 5 January: a result which saw Mason sacked as Albion boss.
James Morrison has been placed in caretaker charge of Albion following Mason’s departure, and he was able to lead West Brom to a penalty shootout win over Swansea in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.
However, Morrison has never really been in the frame to become West Brom‘s new head coach on a permanent basis this past week, and Shilen Patel now appears to have his man in the bag.
Eric Ramsay hours away from West Brom appointment
Minnesota United manager Eric Ramsay was quickly installed as one of the leading candidates to replace Mason, and as the days since the dugout change had been made, it’s grown clearer and clearer that the 33-year-old is the man West Brom want.
Now, in a fresh report from Sky Sports News correspondent Rob Dorsett on Sunday, Ramsay has now verbally agreed to become the Baggies’ new head coach.
It’s stated that a compensation package between West Brom and Minnesota United has been agreed, and that contracts and an official announcement are expected to be done in the next 24 hours.

Which Minnesota United players might Ramsay try and poach for West Brom?
It’s not uncommon – in fact, it’s fairly customary – for coaches to raid their former team after being appointed at a new club.
West Brom have shown they’re in tune with the American market, with George Campbell being their most recent MLS recruit in this season’s summer window, but who might Ramsay potentially want to bring across the pond with him to his new Hawthorns home?
- Ramsay has a 47 win percentage at Minnesota United
- Minnesota scored 56 goals and conceded 39 in 34 MLS regular season games in 2025
- They scored 24 goals from set-pieces
Versatile attacker Joaquin Pereyra was undoubtedly Minnesota’s talisman in 2025, with the 27-year-old scoring eight goals and providing 14 assists in 43 total appearances.
Elsewhere, Anthony Markanich enjoyed a real breakout campaign, with the attack-minded left-sided defender scoring 13 goals and grabbing two assists in 41 games, and could provide some much-needed depth and quality at left-back/left wing-back, depending on what formation Ramsay deploys.
