Former Man United defender says that West Brom want to sign an ‘excellent’ midfielder

West Brom have already been linked with one of Eric Ramsay’s former players.

West Brom fell to a 3-2 defeat against Middlesbrough last time out, showcasing just how much work Ramsay has to do if he is to get the Baggies heading back in the right direction.

Player recruitment is going to be decisive within that task, with Albion having two weeks left of the January window to add more quality to their squad.

Adding more to their attacking options may be a priority, though Albion have been linked with the signing of a midfielder who has worked under Ramsay.

West Brom could reunite Eric Ramsay with former Sunderland star

Albion’s options in the middle of the park are weak, to say the least, with Callum Styles having started their last time out.

Both Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby are out with injuries, leaving Ramsay with very few options to rotate, even if he wanted to.

As a result, West Brom have been linked with Nectar Triantis, who left Sunderland to join Minnesota last summer, where he featured regularly under Ramsay.

Prior to that move, Triantis spent time at Hibernian under former Manchester United academy prospect David Gray, who only had good things to say about the Greece international.

Back in July, Gray said: “I think he had a fantastic season for us. He was excellent. You’ve seen the improvement in him all season. He was brilliant to work with.”

Nectar Triantis’ transition brought the best out of him

When Sunderland signed Triantis from Central Coast Mariners back in 2023, he was initially brought in as a centre-back, which is where he featured in his early days at the Stadium of Light.

However, his tendency to drive up the pitch often saw him getting caught out, which is when Gray made the decision to utilise him as a midfielder upon his loan arrival at Hibernian.

“I think he’s in the last couple of weeks shown a level of consistency again. He’s improving all the time, you forget he’s still a young boy, he’s still learning,” Gray said on Triantis.

“He’s still probably adapting as well at times to a different position, because he’s not played as many games in the middle of the pitch as he has at centre-back in recent years.

The 22-year-old has popped up with some big goals over the last 12 months, as well as showcasing an excellent eye for a pass, as showcased by the 31 chances he created last season despite playing in a deeper role.

He possesses all of the attributes that would make him a perfect signing for West Brom, and given the relationship with Ramsay from his time at MLS, a deal could easily be struck.
