Darren Bent surprises co-host as next possible club for Ryan Mason named post-West Brom

Ryan Mason is searching for his next managerial opportunity after leaving West Brom.

A new era got underway at The Hawthorns last Friday night, as West Brom were beaten 3-2 by Middlesbrough in Eric Ramsay‘s first game in charge.

West Brom fans appear firmly behind Ramsay, who is now tasked with steering Albion away from the threat of relegation and towards the safety of a mid-table finish.

Ramsay will get the opportunity to register his first win as West Brom boss on Tuesday night, when 22nd-placed Norwich City travel to The Hawthorns.

Darren Bent drops Premier League, Ryan Mason claim

Mason‘s appointment as West Brom head coach ahead of this season didn’t go to plan whatsoever, as the young coach suffered some clear teething problems in his first full-time managerial role.

The 34-year-old was unable to buy himself enough time with Shilen Patel, and was sacked after the Baggies’ frustrating 2-1 defeat to Leicester on 5 January.

As such, he’s now looking for his next avenue back into the dugout, and he may not have to wait too long for it.

Thomas Frank is on the verge of being sacked by Tottenham, and Mason has been tipped for a possible caretaker role with Spurs should they pull the trigger on the former Brentford boss.

He’s performed that role for Tottenham twice in the past, and so he could be a viable candidate for an interim position if that is the route Spurs do indeed go down.

And speaking on talkSPORT on Monday, Darren Bent feels that it would be a sensible decision to appoint Mason as caretaker manager, but perhaps only if it meant one thing.

“Ryan Mason not long ago got the bullet from West Brom. He’s picked up the pieces before, so would Spurs fans take him if it meant Pochettino then coming back?” is the question presenter Andy Goldstein presented Bent with.

Bent replied: “Yeah, if it’s Mason until the end of the season, knowing [Mauricio] Pochettino then comes back…”

Goldstein then responded with “really?” in a slightly surprised tone, before tailing off from that particular topic of debate.

Tottenham caretaker job may be best Mason could hope for right now

For his first job in full-time senior management, Mason was jumping into the deep end when taking charge of an expectant Championship club such as West Brom.

Whilst times have been tough financially in recent years, Albion haven’t failed to finish below 10th in the second tier table since their 2021 relegation from the Premier League.

As such, play-offs are pretty much the perennial aim at The Hawthorns, and with the Baggies now sitting 19th in the table after finishing ninth last season, one can truly see how far they’ve fallen within the division’s standings this term.

Therefore, Mason’s services probably won’t be particularly coveted at the moment, so the chance once again take charge of a Premier League team would surely be a no-brainer for him if the opportunity presents itself.
