Ryan Mason could land himself new management job weeks after West Brom sack as big update emerges
Ryan Mason may be set for a quick return to the dugout after his West Brom exit.
West Brom’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester City on 5 January proved to be a watershed result in Albion’s 2025-26 season, as Mason was sacked in the hours after the full-time whistle blew.
Shilen Patel moved quickly to find his successor too, with Eric Ramsay already having won the support of many fans.
There was much West Brom excitement surrounding Mason’s appointment back in June of last year, but the young coach simply couldn’t stamp home a philosophy or deliver results at The Hawthorns in time.

Ryan Mason could be waiting by the Tottenham phone
Having first taken up a coaching role at Tottenham in April 2018, Mason graduated from an academy coaching role to a first-team one in April 2021.
Mason spoke about his time as a coach with Spurs after being handed his first full-time managerial role with West Brom ahead of the 2025-26 season, and he spoke highly of how much he’d learned from his years there.
Tottenham are in a bit of a mess at the moment, with the appointment of Thomas Frank not going to plan whatsoever, with the team perilously close to being dragged into a relegation battle.
As such, Frank is understood to be on the verge of being sacked as Spurs head coach, with a vacancy in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium dugout possibly just around the corner.
Given the midseason nature of a potential sacking, going with a caretaker – perhaps until the end of the season – may be the route that Tottenham’s decision-makers go down, and Mason could be an ideal candidate.

He knows the club inside out having spent a number of years coaching at both academy and first-team levels, and has spent two separate occasions as the club’s caretaker manager, both in 2021 and 2023.
Therefore, whilst there would potentially be both permanent and interim candidates to compete with, Spurs may feel confident he’d be the best man for the job given his prior experience in the role.
Mason should take heart from Michael Carrick
Tottenham may soon find themselves in a similar situation to Manchester United, in which the permanent manager is removed earlier than planned, and a caretaker is required for the rest of the season.
There won’t have been many Middlesbrough fans expecting see Michael Carrick’s next dugout role being at Old Trafford after his Riverside exit in June 2025, having only been able to finish 10th in the Championship in 2024-25.
Indeed, in his only two full seasons in charge on Teesside, Carrick’s Middlesbrough missed the play-offs on both occasions, with his brand of football and tactical stubbornness also coming in for major criticism.
So, as far as Mason’s concerned, although his West Brom experience didn’t go to plan, neither did Carrick’s at Boro, and yet he’s still been trusted to lead a top club like Man United on a temporary basis as he has done before.
Time will soon tell whether Tottenham are indeed looking for an interim boss, and if so, then Mason should have his phone nearby as his number may be called.
