Wolves manage something in Premier League not achieved since West Brom

West Brom supporters are hoping that in Eric Ramsay, they’ve finally found the man who can eventually lead them back to the Premier League.

Ramsay‘s first game in charge ended in defeat, as West Brom lost 3-2 to Middlesbrough last Friday night.

It’s a result that leaves West Brom sitting 19th in the Championship, as Albion remain in genuine relegation danger unless they can turn things around ASAP.

There’s also the possibility that Ramsay may not have any money to spend in the transfer market this month, as Shilen Patel continues to try and guide Albion out of financial danger too.

However, despite all that, there is a real sense of optimism among West Brom fans that Ramsay will bring success back to The Hawthorns, however much time that may or may not require.

Of course, the first priority is to stay in the Championship this season, and then from there, the hope is the 33-year-old head coach can start building the Baggies back towards promotion contention.

He defied the odds with Minnesota United when leading them to the MLS play-offs, and so despite his youthfulness, he’s already provided evidence that he can produce a competitive team.

That’s something that West Brom’s 2017-18 side certainly weren’t, however, as under the management of Tony Pulis, Alan Pardew and finally Darren Moore, Albion finished rock-bottom of the Premier League with 31 points that year.

However, they were able to go on a five-game unbeaten run between 7 April-5 May 2018 whilst being bottom of the table, which included wins over Man United, Newcastle and Tottenham respectively.

And up until last Sunday, that somewhat unwanted record had stood ever since, but that was until Wolves were able to draw 0-0 with Newcastle on 18 January.

That makes Wolves the first team since West Brom eight years ago to go four unbeaten while at the foot of the English top flight.

West Brom’s 2017-18 season by the numbers

Naturally, 2017-18 was a campaign to forget for West Brom supporters, but their side did still come close to staying up, having finished just five points behind 17th-placed Southampton.

Their defence was pretty solid that year too all things considered, as their 56 goals conceded were fewer than eighth-placed Everton (58) and only five more than sixth-placed Arsenal.

However, it was at the other end of the pitch that cost the Baggies dearly, as they netted just 31 times in the league, which was actually better than Swansea and Huddersfield, who scored 28 goals each.

Salomon Rondon and Jay Rodriguez both finished as joint-top scorers with seven, with everyone else in the squad bar those two scoring two goals or less.

Chris Brunt topped the assists chart with seven, and Moore survived as West Brom boss into the Championship, before being sacked in March 2019.
