Eric Ramsay wants West Brom transfer breakthrough to sign Sunderland player now
West Brom’s need for new signings was made clearer than ever in their 5-0 defeat to Norwich.
Eric Ramsay is already under the microscope at West Brom after two consecutive losses to start his reign in the dugout.
The Hawthorns faithful booed their new manager’s side as they walked off the pitch after the Canaries defeat.
The fanbase is frustrated with the lack of action in the winter transfer window, but that may be set to change after a new update.
Ramsay wants to sign Anthony Patterson from Sunderland
One area that Ramsay‘s side needs fresh impetus is the goalkeeping department, as Ryan Mason could not pick between Josh Griffiths and Joe Wildsmith.
Griffiths has been chosen as West Brom’s number one for the immediate, but he has conceded eight goals in his last two matches.
A report from Football League World on 21 January claims that Ramsay is planning to move for Anthony Patterson on loan this month.
The 25-year-old has made just one appearance for Sunderland this season, in the Carabao Cup defeat to Huddersfield Town.
Why West Brom should be looking to sign Patterson permanently
Patterson is an experienced stopper at the Championship level, and he is clearly surplus to requirements in the North East.
He has made 133 appearances in the division, keeping 41 clean sheets and conceding 149 goals in that time since being promoted into the starting role in the 2021/22 season, when the Black Cats won promotion from League One.
| Stats | Griffiths (25-26, Championship) | Patterson (24-25, Championship) |
| Appearances | 21 | 45 |
| Goals conceded | 32 | 45 |
| Clean sheets | 4 | 14 |
He is not going to oust Robin Roefs in Regis Le Bris’ starting line-up anytime soon, so surely he would fancy a permanent exit from the Stadium of Light.
Albion should make their move, when their finances are in a better state in the summer, and they are not under as much pressure from PSR, and agree a buy option for then as part of the loan deal.
It remains to be seen whether that is achievable, but it seems like a no-brainer for all parties concerned.
Ramsay’s side needs a goalkeeper who has second-tier quality, the Mackems would gain a fee for a player they do not use, and the player would play regularly again in a league that he already knows.
