Ryan Mason already lined up for ‘shock’ next job after West Brom sack

Ryan Mason may return to the dugout soon after his West Brom sacking.

Last June, West Brom appointed Mason as their new head coach after dismissing Tony Mowbray two months prior.

That ended his seven-year coaching stay at Tottenham, but after just over six months at The Hawthorns, West Brom sacked Mason following a poor first half of the season.

West Brom appointed Minnesota United boss Eric Ramsay as his successor earlier this month, but two straight losses have seen them drop to 19th in the Championship.

After being warned these are “dangerous” times for West Brom by Aston Villa hero Gabby Agbonlahor, their former boss Mason may return to coaching soon.

Mason to make Premier League return?

Mason has had interim stints at Tottenham before, but the West Brom job was his first senior coaching role.

Unfortunately for him, that didn’t go too well. However, he could be returning to the Premier League this year.

According to SportsBoom, the 34-year-old is being lined up as a potential interim boss should Tottenham sack Thomas Frank.

The Dane has been repeatedly booed by Spurs fans after some abject performances as they slide down the Premier League table, although their 2-0 Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday will have helped his cause.

If Frank is dismissed, the report adds that former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, and even recently sacked Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim are in the running to replace him.

Even though Mason is “way down the pecking order”, the young coach is viewed as a safe pair of hands by the Spurs’ hierarchy in the short term.

West Brom facing crucial period

Championship strugglers West Brom have been linked with many players during the January transfer window as they bid to stay in the division.

West Brom spent more than £10million on players this summer, signing the likes of striker Aune Heggebo, centre-back Nat Phillips, and full-back Alfie Gilchrist.

But few have excelled this term, and in the final 10 days or so of the January window, West Brom are yet to sign anyone.

If they decide against dipping into the January transfer window, they could soon drop into the relegation zone, which is looming large after four straight losses.

West Brom are just three points above the relegation zone ahead of their away matches at 10th-placed Derby County and third-from-bottom Portsmouth this month.

If they fail to pick up points in these games, Ramsay could be under pressure to keep his job already.
