Nigel Quashie reacts after West Brom Women win vs Wolves, fans love it
West Brom pulled off a Black Country derby upset over Wolves in the FA Women’s National League Cup on Sunday afternoon.
This season has proven to be a difficult one for the Midlands outfit across all ranks. West Brom appointed Ryan Mason as their new head coach for the men’s team last summer, but he’s already gone.
West Brom swore in Minnesota United boss Eric Ramsay as his successor in early January, but so far, he is winless at the Baggies.
And with West Brom Women, they are seventh in the Women’s National League Northern Premier Division, with Siobhan Hodgetts-Still‘s side just seven points above the relegation zone.
West Brom were knocked out of the FA Cup by Women’s Super League side Everton just over a week ago, but they reached the semi-finals of the FA WNL Cup with a shock 1-0 win at Wolves.
West Brom Women earn cup upset over Wolves
West Brom progressed to the last four of the competition with an away win at National League North promotion hopefuls Wolves this weekend.
Despite the hosts sitting 20 points ahead of West Brom in the league in second, Hannah George’s 51st-minute winner proved the difference at SEAH Stadium.
West Brom had to weather a late storm by Wolves, but the underdogs held on to set up a semi-final tie on 1 February at home to AFC Bournemouth.
The result prompted a big reaction on social media, with former West Brom star Nigel Quashie among those celebrating the victory.
Other West Brom fans were thrilled at this cup upset, while others couldn’t resist sticking the boot into their neighbours.
One fan wrote on X, “Great controlled performance, deserved,” while another tweeted, “Nothing better than a derby day win! Up the Baggies.”
Hodgets-Still herself tweeted, “Top performance from the players today. I couldn’t have asked for more. A well-deserved derby day win and into the semi-finals we go.”
West Brom Women eye important milestone
Up until June 2024, West Brom Women were a separate entity from the men’s side, before being fully incorporated just over 18 months ago.
As part of this progression, Hodgetts-Still was appointed West Brom Women’s first full-time head coach in February 2025.
She said this was a “proud” moment for her, but there is a lot of work to be done for a side in the third tier of women’s football.
West Brom sporting director Andrew Nestor said the club’s ultimate goal was to turn the women’s team into a “fully professional setup”.
| West Brom Women’s FA WNL Cup run | Round |
| Stourbridge 0-4 West Brom | Group stage |
| West Brom 2-0 Leicester City | Group stage |
| West Brom 2-0 Leafield Athletic | Group stage |
| West Brom 2-0 Stoke City | First round knockouts |
| West Brom 1-1 (a.e.t) Leeds United (won 4-2 on penalties) | Second round knockouts |
| Wolves 0-1 West Brom | Quarter-finals |
He said last year, “We have ambitious plans for the team, and Shev has been tasked with helping us to outline our long-term strategic vision to drive progress towards a fully professional setup.”
While promotion out of their current league is virtually impossible, with Burnley and Wolves sitting on 35 and 34 points, respectively, West Brom’s cup progression is a big boost.
Now, they will hope to beat FA Women’s National League South side Bournemouth in the semi-finals early next month.
