West Brom’s Mikey Johnston approached to join club where transfer window remains open

West Brom winger Mikey Johnston has attracted very late interest in the transfer market.

So far, this season has been one to forget for The Hawthorns outfit. West Brom sacked head coach Ryan Mason in January, and his successor, Eric Ramsay, is struggling right now.

West Brom lost 3-0 to Portsmouth on Saturday and sit just three points above the Championship relegation zone.

The Baggies were able to bring in a few players over the course of the winter window, as they seek to rise in the table, away from danger.

Conversely, it appears that winger Johnston had offers on the table before the winter window slammed shut in England.

Turkish giant makes late move for West Brom star Mikey Johnston

Johnston initially joined West Brom on loan from Celtic in the 2023-24 season, with the Republic of Ireland international scoring seven goals in 20 appearances.

That convinced West Brom, who had realistic promotion hopes, to sign him permanently in the summer of 2024 on a four-year contract.

Since then, he hasn’t been as effective in front of goal, getting on the scoresheet five times in 67 matches.

But that appears to have been enough for Turkish side Trabzonspor, who made a move for the 26-year-old, according to Express and Star reporter Lewis Cox.

He added that the winger rejected “very firm” transfer window interest on deadline day, who was also wanted by several other unnamed clubs.

West Brom are just one place above the relegation zone, but he hasn’t shied away, given Turkish clubs have until Friday to make new signings.

Will West Brom’s winter signings help them stay up?

Over the course of the winter transfer window, West Brom have slid further down the Championship table.

Indeed, the Baggies have picked up one draw and three defeats during Ramsay’s tenure and for the time being, it is hard to see where the wins will come from.

In a bid to improve their fortunes, West Brom recruited Bristol City goalkeeper Max O’Leary, Crystal Palace youngsters Hindolo Mustapha and Danny Imray, plus Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba, who joined on loan from Aston Villa.

While youthful players can be of great service to any team, sometimes a bit of experience and know-how is ideal to get a club out of a relegation dogfight.

Jimoh-Aloba may offer something different going forward, but O’Leary and Imray have had inauspicious starts to their West Brom careers. Only time will tell if they have done enough in the market to stay up.
