In-depth guide to Eric Ramsay’s West Brom situation – Will he be sacked in record-breaking fashion?

West Brom boss Eric Ramsay is fighting to save his job already, despite having only been appointed less than a month ago.

A matter of days after West Brom dismissed summer appointee Ryan Mason following an ill-fated first half of the season, Ramsay was given the reins at The Hawthorns in January.

But after just four matches and no wins, pressure is ramping up on the 34-year-old, with Ramsay being tipped for the sack at West Brom.

The Baggies are languishing in the relegation zone and are at risk of dropping into the third tier of English football for the first time since 1991.

So, is Ramsay a dead man walking at West Brom? To examine that question, West Brom News has dug a little deeper.

Eric Ramsay’s shaky start at West Brom

A few eyebrows were raised when West Brom moved to appoint Minnesota United boss Ramsay, who was in his first managerial role. Undaunted by sacking one inexperienced 34-year-old, West Brom plucked for another in Ramsay on 11 January.

Fast forward to the present, though, and West Brom are in the bottom three and are second bottom in the Championship form table for the last 12 games, with basement side Sheffield Wednesday bringing up the rear.

What didn’t help his cause was the fact that West Brom had built a squad that was set up to play a 4-2-3-1 under Mason, but Ramsay utilised three centre-backs at Minnesota.

Two heavy defeats to Norwich City and Portsmouth and a four-game winless run have prompted Ramsay to rethink that formation.

During a relegation fight, players with know-how and experience are often must-haves. But West Brom’s January signings included loans for Aston Villa’s Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba and Crystal Palace’s Hindolo Mustapha, both of whom are 19. Naturally, some fans weren’t happy.

West Brom are also in a precarious situation when it comes to their finances. It, therefore, begs the question, why appoint Ramsay when he doesn’t have the players to execute his system?

Chaos amongst West Brom’s board and in-fighting

At the end of a 3-0 drubbing by Portsmouth at Fratton Park last Saturday, a result that saw Pompey leapfrog West Brom in the table, emotions ran high. West Brom’s Isaac Price had to be dragged away from confronting his own supporters, and new reports suggest this is the tip of the iceberg.

According to prominent West Brom writer Chris Lepkowski, there was an alleged training ground bust-up with midfielder Jayson Molumby and Ramsay this week. Moreover, before talk of West Brom president Andrew Nestor leaving surfaced, all was reportedly not well in the Baggies’ upper echelons.

Lepkowski writes that before Ramsay was unveiled, “panicked senior figures” frantically tried to locate Nestor for the press conference.

He did not turn up, however, with owner Shilen Patel facing the press instead, with “nobody” allegedly knowing where Nestor was.

He adds that it is “troubling” that West Brom’s head coaches have allegedly been removed from the transfer process to the point of “not being invited to recruitment meetings”.

Lepkowski alleges that one Baggies boss was walking next to the recruitment headquarters, only to have the door “slammed shut in his face”.

These are dark times for 22nd-placed West Brom.

Ramsay facing historic sack as West Brom veer towards League One

In December 2024, head coach Carlos Corberan left West Brom to take over at La Liga side Valencia. Many fans mourned the strict Spaniard’s departure, but Jed Wallace admitted it was “more normal” when he left.

Wallace explained in March 2025, when Tony Mowbray was back in charge, that everything was “military mode” under Corberan, who was so focused on “football, football, football”.

To some fans, standards have been allowed to slip since then and going by the league table, they have a point. Mowbray was given his marching orders after less than 100 days in the post, but at this rate, Ramsay could be out the door in far less time.

Indeed, former West Brom boss Slaven Bilic has been linked with the job as they slide down the table.

According to bookmakers, Ramsay is the favourite at 5/4 to be the next Championship manager sacked, with Birmingham City’s Chris Davies second and Sheffield Wednesday’s Henrik Pedersen third.

Unless things improve quickly, starting at home to Stoke City on Saturday, Ramsay could be a West Brom record-breaker for all the wrong reasons.
