Everything Tottenham fans need to know about Ryan Mason’s spell at West Brom as he’s linked with interim role

Ryan Mason’s spell as West Brom manager wasn’t impressive in the slightest.

Mason was sacked on 6 January after West Brom lost 1-0 to Leicester City in the Championship.

The English manager suffered 10 consecutive away defeats in the Championship, and Shilen Patel had no other choice but to dismiss Mason as the atmosphere around B71 became increasingly toxic.

Tottenham have just sacked Thomas Frank, and after being their caretaker manager in the past, the former Baggies head coach could now be set for a return to North London.

Ryan Mason was a disastrous appointment for West Brom

The Hawthorns lacked life and inspiration during Mason’s reign, and it wasn’t long before the 34-year-old was under pressure.

Fans were against his tenure due to the dull style of football which he brought to the table, and he failed to get the best out of several West Brom players.

After such a positive start to the campaign, the Baggies slid down the table rather quickly, and before you knew it, they were at the wrong end of the division.

West Brom are among the frontrunners to be relegated to League One, and although Eric Ramsay hasn’t done well himself, the majority of the blame lies with Mason.

Frank had a similar spell at Tottenham, with their season starting well before it completely unravelled.

It’s clear that Mason doesn’t have the pedigree to manage Spurs permanently, and if he were to be hired, it would only be until the end of the season on an interim role.

In 2021 and 2023, he took charge of Tottenham’s first team to see out disappointing seasons, and that could very well happen again.

Having joined Spurs’ coaching staff in April 2018, it’s clear that his ties lie closely with the North London outfit.

Their priority at the moment is to avoid relegation from the Premier League, as they sit just five points above the drop zone.

What has Simon Jordan said about Mason returning to Tottenham?

There are several reasons why Frank failed at Spurs, and just like Mason, it was his boring footballing philosophy that eventually cost him.

The Dane has been a dead man walking for many months, and it’s a shock that it has taken so long for him to be relieved of his duties.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 11 February, Jordan believes that Spurs will bring Mason back to the club in order to appease the players.

He said: “They’ll get the guy who put West Brom in the relegation zone. Of course, they’ll bring Mason back.

“If the only reason the Spurs players aren’t performing is that they aren’t happy, then go and get a court jester in. Go and get anyone who makes them happier.”

While Mason has a lot of love for Spurs, he doesn’t have the experience or previous success to drag them out of a truly horrible situation.

If he is given the chance to return, he evidently won’t turn down the opportunity, but if there’s anything West Brom fans know, it’s that he is not capable of leading a Championship side.

Let alone a Premier League team that is staring down the barrel of relegation.
