Ex-Wolves keeper Matt Murray makes ‘crazy’ West Brom admission after what he saw in away end

Not much has gone right for West Brom this season but their fans have been praised.

Following West Brom’s goalless draw with Stoke City last Saturday, hopes weren’t particularly high of picking up a point against Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

West Brom were without centre-back Chris Mepham due to injury but he wasn’t badly missed at St Andrew’s in the wind and the rain.

While head coach Eric Ramsay is still searching for his first win in charge, West Brom secured a 0-0 draw against in-form Birmingham as they withstood a late barrage.

Thousands of West Brom fans cheered their team on against their local rivals on Tuesday night, something former Wolves man Matt Murray was quick to point out.

West Brom’s ‘big away following’ gets the seal of approval

Despite sitting 19th in the Championship, a mere two points above the relegation zone, West Brom’s fans did their bit to get Ramsay’s side over the line.

Six games into Welshman Ramsay’s tenure, he has yet to taste victory, with three draws and three losses so far.

West Brom’s last win was all the way back on 29 December at home to Queens Park Rangers, at a time when Ryan Mason was still in charge.

West Brom, arguably, have a squad capable of challenging for the play-off positions and yet, here they are, languishing near the bottom three.

And while so much has gone wrong for West Brom this season, ex-Wolves goalkeeper Murray praised the visitors’ away following during the contest, while admitting his surprise at the Baggies’ predicament.

The former Wolves keeper said on Sky Sports News: “West Brom have brought a big away following today. It’s crazy they’re in such trouble at the moment.”

West Brom show fight but need more in attack to stay up

Prior to the Stoke game, West Brom hadn’t kept a clean sheet in 11 league games. Ramsay was, naturally, encouraged by that but they offered little going forward.

They put in an even better defensive performance against Birmingham, who had won four of their last six league games and are within touching distance of the top six.

They have scored 32 goals in as many games but their last goal came in a 1-1 draw at Derby County on 23 January.

The last time they scored more than one goal was back on 16 January in a 2-3 defeat to Middlesbrough.

Upcoming matches against out-of-form Coventry City and lowly Charlton Athletic and Oxford United present an opportunity to get their first win under Ramsay.

But if they are to stave off their first relegation to League One since 1991, they need to create more and start scoring some much-needed goals.
