Tony Brown shares scathing verdict on ‘unprofessional’ West Brom scenes vs Coventry City
West Brom were blasted by Tony Brown as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Coventry City on Saturday.
Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni condemned Eric Ramsay to an eighth straight winless game since he took over as West Brom manager.
The Hawthorns crowd made their displeasure known, with plenty of boos and jeers in the contest, as the Baggies looked lethargic and pedestrian.
The Championship leaders strolled to an easy victory, which left Albion stuck firmly in the relegation battle, to the dismay of their all-time leading goalscorer.
What angered Tony Brown in West Brom’s loss to Coventry?
Brown was particularly frustrated with how easy Rudoni was allowed to smash home a wonderful second for the league leaders.
He was aghast at the lack of effort from the Baggies players to close the 24-year-old down in the build-up to the strike.
Speaking on BBC Radio WM on 21 February, he said: “Albion gave an early goal away, and that set the tone, the fans aren’t happy and Coventry have been comfortable and happy, Albion can’t break them down.
“There has to be a talk from the manager at half-time that puts some spirit and some zip into the players.
“You can not allow a player to run free to the edge of your box, Jack Rudoni has smacked it and it’s gone into the top corner, that’s not professional, you have to close him down.”
Why Ramsay cannot stay at West Brom
The performance suggests that the players have already lost faith in Ramsay’s ability to lead them out of their current rut.
They do not look like a team that are playing for the manager, and even when they got into promising positions to potentially get back into the game, they were slow to make decisions and pull the trigger.
It is a damning indictment of the former Manchester United coach’s tenure, and surely he cannot last much longer in the dugout.
If he does keep his position, then the Throstles will struggle to keep their place in the second-tier; it is as simple as that, they are steamrolling towards relegation.
He has not been able to improve them defensively, and his system does not get the best out of the attackers that he has at his disposal, which is a dismal combination.
It is hard to see where the improvement is going to come from, and that is not acceptable, given what is at stake, with so little time remaining in the season.
Relegation looks to be a forgone conclusion at the moment, and there needs to be a change to turn that around, and it may just come with the man in the dugout, even though he has only managed eight matches.
