Don Goodman gives free next manager advice to West Brom, he has evidence to back it up

West Brom have sacked their second manager of the season in Eric Ramsay after their 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic in the Championship on Tuesday.

Former Baggie Don Goodman now wants his former side to appoint someone with a bit more experience after giving Ryan Mason and the Welsh head coach an opportunity.

The Hawthorns hosted the Addicks on 24 February, and Ramsay was sacked after failing to win any of his nine games in charge of the Albion.

Since Carlos Corberan’s departure in December 2024, the West Midlands outfit are now in search of their fourth permanent boss, and they may be better served to go with someone who has been in the game for some time.

West Brom have Championship evidence from last season in new manager search

Goodman highlights that the four best teams in the Championship last season were managed by managers who had years of experience under their belts.

Daniel Farke led Leeds United to automatic Premier League promotion, as did Scott Parker at Burnley, while Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland surprised many when they beat Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United in the play-offs final.

Leicester City recently sacked Marti Cifuentes and appointed Gary Rowett as the Foxes find themselves in a similar situation at West Brom.

Goodman believes the Baggies should be looking to appoint someone with a similar reputation to the now Leicester boss, but it remains to be seen who Bilkul Football will go with.

Ramsay’s record at West Brom

Speaking on Sky Sports News on 25 February, the ex-English striker said, “They’ve missed the boat with Rowett, haven’t they? Or somebody of that ilk. I’m all for young, aspiring head coaches getting an opportunity. Mason had an opportunity. Ramsay had an opportunity.

“But the cold hard facts are, if you look at the four best teams last season in the Championship, they were managed by Chris Wilder, 57 years old, Daniel Farke, 49, Regis Le Bris, 49, and Scott Parker, 45. So there’s something to be said about experience, and I think I’d like to see them have a look and see if they can attract someone with a little experience.”

Shilen Patel may turn to familiar face for interim stint at The Hawthorns

West Brom are just one point above the relegation zone as things stand, and Shilen Patel surely can’t make a mistake with his next hire.

If the Baggies do decide to go with someone who has more experience, then Tony Mowbray’s name could potentially crop up in conversations.

The 62-year-old’s initial stint at The Hawthorns was memorable, leading the Albion to promotion, but he lasted just 17 matches after replacing Corberan last season.

Considering the situation the Black Country outfit find themselves in, they need a head coach who can take the bull by the horns and secure safety in the short-term, and Mowbray might not be a bad shout for an interim stint in B71.
