West Brom fans universal on Tony Mowbray to Hawthorns return claim – ‘Staggering’

Eric Ramsay has been sacked as West Brom head coach, and Tony Mowbray’s name is being touted with a possible Hawthorns reunion.

Ramsay must’ve known he was running out of road as West Brom head coach following his dismal start, and now he’s the second Baggies boss to be left by the wayside this season.

Indeed, Shilen Patel had seen enough after Albion’s 1-1 draw with Charlton on Tuesday night, pulling Ramsay into his office post-match and relieving him and his assistant Dennis Lawrence of their duties.

First-team coach James Morrison will once again take on the role as interim head coach for the time being, with Patel knowing full well that his third managerial appointment of the term has to be a home run.

If not, Albion could be destined for League One football, and so it will be fascinating to see which direction Baggies hierarchy go with this one. Will they opt for experience, or take another big gamble on a youthful coach?

West Brom fans shut down Tony Mowbray return talk

One potential candidate who would fall into the former of those two categories is Mowbray, with the 62-year-old boasting over 500 games of Championship football under his managerial belt.

‘Mogga’ forever earned himself a place in the hearts of The Hawthorns faithful when guiding the club to Premier League promotion in 2007-08, during his first two-and-a-half-year spell in charge in B71.

However, his second stint as West Brom boss during the second half of last season wasn’t as memorable, with his side winning just five of his 17 Championship games before he was sacked in April 2025.

But, with Ramsay now gone, talkSPORT correspondent Alex Crook has been among those suggesting Mowbray should come back for a third stab at the Albion job, but the majority of Baggies fans don’t seem to agree.

“That makes zero sense. Mowbray couldn’t get a tune out of many of the same players last season, why would they listen to him now?” one West Brom fan said.

“A statement from someone who knows absolutely nothing about our club,” said another Albion supporter.

Alan Brazil stunned at Ramsay’s West Brom reign

Seeing West Brom in deep relegation trouble at the bottom of the Championship is a shocking sight for anyone clued up on their second tier football.

Albion are undoubtedly one of the biggest clubs in the division, and have spent just two seasons below the second tier since the Football League began all the way back in 1888.

And speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, host Alan Brazil can’t believe what he’s seeing at The Hawthorns right now, and makes an ominous claim that something isn’t right behind the scenes.

“Ramsay failed to win any of his nine games. How can that happen? Nine games in charge… something’s wrong,” Brazil said.

Given his track record of poor managerial appointment after poor appointment at West Brom so far, questions certainly need to be asked of Patel’s decision-making if the next one isn’t any better.
