Alex Mowatt hasn’t deserved to be in West Brom’s relegation struggle – here’s why
Few West Brom players can hold their heads high come the end of the season, but Alex Mowatt should.
2025-26 has been nothing short of calamitous for West Brom so far, and there may well be further pain to come.
Shilen Patel is now looking to appoint his third new head coach of the season, following January’s sacking of Ryan Mason and the axing of Eric Ramsay following the 1-1 draw to Charlton on Tuesday night.
44 days is all Ramsay could manage in The Hawthorns hot seat, as his nine games without a win leave Albion sitting one point above the relegation zone with 34 games played.

Alex Mowatt has been consistently good for West Brom this season
Not all of the blame can simply be shouldered on Mason and Ramsay for West Brom’s relegation predicament they find themselves in, as the players haven’t been good enough either.
With 33 goals scored and 50 conceded, Albion have been struggling at both ends of the pitch this term, but it’s those in the centre of midfield, and in particular Mowatt, who have been the Baggies’ consistent-best.
Indeed, despite having lost 17 games this term with only nine wins on the board, West Brom still boast a better average possession number (51.3 per cent) than the likes of Hull, Wrexham, Bristol City, Millwall and Derby respectively.

Albion have also completed the third-most accurate passes per match in the Championship this season (371.7), and much of that has been down to the work of Mowatt.
The 31-year-old has been one of the first names on the Baggies teamsheet since returning from his loan with Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023, and despite Albion’s poor performances this term, he’s still consistently shown his class.
It was Mowatt’s corner that George Campbell nodded home Albion’s goal from against Charlton, and the central midfielder has deserved more goal contributions than his five this season.
As per Sofascore, he’s created six big chances, registered a 93 per cent passing accuracy in his own half, has won 61 per cent of his ground duels and has made zero errors leading to a shot.
West Brom surely have no chance of retaining Mowatt in League One
Certain players have no business playing at a specific level, and that’s true for Mowatt and League One.
If that is to be where West Brom are playing their football next season, then the experienced midfielder will surely have no shortage of Championship suitors looking to steal him away from The Hawthorns.
He’s proven himself to be a quality operator at second tier level for many years now, and he can’t have much interest in stepping down a level whilst he’s still playing well.
West Brom’s only saving grace is the fact he signed a new two-year contract with the Baggies in August 2025, meaning Albion don’t have to sell this summer whatever happens.
