Mikey Johnston injury could be sliding doors Ollie Bostock moment in West Brom’s season

West Brom need a hero to rescue them from the threat of Championship relegation, and they may just have stumbled across one.

Saturday proved to be the latest in a long line of frustrating Championship matchdays for West Brom in 2025-26, as they were defeated 2-1 by relegation rivals Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.

Interim head coach James Morrison pulled no punches in his post-match interview, confessing that he felt let down by his Albion players on Saturday, and questioned their personality.

It’s the kind of emotions that West Brom fans have been feeling for some time now, and so in many ways, it was perhaps a relief to hear a senior figure at the club come out and express those viewpoints.

Morrison will be hoping that his words extract a fuelled-up response from his players, determined to prove him wrong, ahead of a big test away at Sheffield United on Saturday.

Mikey Johnston injury opens Ollie Bostock door for West Brom

Sometimes, a hero emerges from seemingly nowhere and changes the course of a season for a football club: step forward, Ollie Bostock.

Just 22 minutes into the game against Oxford, talismanic winger Mikey Johnston was forced off with an ankle injury, with fears that it will sideline him for an extended period.

Morrison had a number of more senior attacking players he could’ve turned to from his bench in that moment, instead, he called Bostock’s number.

The 19-year-old Welsh youth international had only made four first-team appearances for the Baggies prior to Saturday, all of which coming this season.

Two of those came in the Championship, culminating in just six minutes of league football to that point, but he didn’t require much more than that to leave his mark on the game against the U’s.

Cutting inside from the left, Bostock hit a right-footed effort from around 25 yards which was deflected off an Oxford defender’s boot, leaving Jamie Cumming helpless to prevent it from hitting the back of the net.

His impact on the game didn’t stop there, as the teenager continued to look at home down the Albion left throughout the afternoon, and was arguably the Baggies’ best player on the day.

Bostock will give everything to the West Brom cause

In the type of situation West Brom find themselves in, you need players on the pitch who will fight for every ball, on every blade of grass, in every minute of each game.

Bostock will do exactly that for Albion, having first joined the Baggies at the age of six, and has been with them ever since.

He knows exactly what this football club means to the supporters, and so whilst others look tired and drained of confidence, Bostock’s industry could in turn force other senior players to up their levels too.

A disillusioned Albion fanbase need a player that they can rally behind, and point towards to say ‘he’s giving everything to our cause’, and Bostock can be that player.
