James Morrison given mountain to climb at West Brom amid daunting Sheffield United reveal

West Brom are desperate to secure their first Championship win in 2026 when they face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

James Morrison might be the head coach until the end of the season, but he’ll be fully aware of the task ahead, as relegation to League One is becoming increasingly likely each week.

The Baggies are currently sat in 21st place, just one point clear of the drop zone, and with the likes of Millwall, Hull City, Wrexham and Ipswich still to play, their future in the Championship looks incredibly bleak.

Sheffield United may be one of West Brom’s more winnable games on paper, but given the Black Country outfit’s poor form, a loss is expected.

And that would leave Morrison with even more work to do in the last 10 games of the campaign.

West Brom should be worried ahead of Sheffield United clash

West Brom are now winless in their last 14 away matches in the Championship, and their poor results at The Hawthorns have now left them in immediate danger of playing League One football next season.

While Morrison will want to end this dreadful run of games, it’s safe to say that it doesn’t look likely.

Since the last international break in November, no side has won more Championship matches than Sheffield United (12), while only Sheffield Wednesday (zero) have fewer wins in that time than West Brom (three).

The Baggies are also winless in 11 league games, their worst run since going 13 without a win between July and November 2020.

West Brom haven’t won at Bramall Lane since 2018, losing three of their four trips to the Steel City ever since.

Sheffield United are clearly the favourites for the match, and Morrison will be dreading the prospect of losing another important game as head coach.

Although they may have won the reverse fixture 2-0, the Baggies are a shell of the team that looked promising under Ryan Mason at the start of the season.

Have West Brom’s players already given up?

It’s a serious accusation, but fans will wonder why they aren’t seeing more fight from their team.

Alex Mowatt and Jayson Molumby have been lethargic in midfield, while Josh Maja seems to have his heart elsewhere.

The defending has been laughable, while goalkeepers Josh Griffiths and Max O’Leary have made several mistakes between them this season.

Six players came over to the travelling supporters after last weekend’s loss to Oxford United, which was incredibly poor, as the fans have been through hell in recent months.

This is hardly a group of players they can get behind, and it’s not fair that they have to watch a team devoid of confidence and hope play like this every week.

Morrison has a lot to do in a short amount of time, and any sort of positive result against Sheffield United would definitely be a step in the right direction.
